The thing to do is take a nipple to the store with you and ask them what you need to fit it to your pipe.
They can see and measure it to insure you get the right tools

What side drill bit would you need for 1/8th MALE?

You need a 5/16'' or 21/64'' drill bit and 1/8x27 npt tap for most all threaded items related to chicken water nipples and cups. If you tell the guys at the hardware store you need a 1/8"NPT tab it will usually have stamped on it the proper size drill bit.

At least that is what I have and have used with success on Standard nipples, cups, and horizontal nipples with tapered threads.

In the process of making this. Frustrated.

Tried a tapered bit, and the one the store sold me is too big to make the hole I need in a 3/4 pipe. (it has the right hole size that I need, but is too long to make the hole in the 3/4 pipe without coming out the other end.)

Tried a standard bit, and it leaks like crazy. And yes, I used thread tape. As I tighten the nipples the gaskets are sliding to one side and not giving me a good seal. I tried to use two gaskets, with no luck.

Before I load it with epoxy, and render them unusable if they still leak, any other suggestions?

Scrap the whole idea and get the push in nipples the hole is 11/32 and put them in the bottom of the bucket it is so much easier if you don't have the proper tools.

Hold the bit beside the nipples and only the threads should be visible beyond the side of the bit

If you purchase them inexpensively you can use PVC cement on the threads and the pvc pipe and it won't leak. EVER!!!

If you decide you don't like it for some reason you haven't spent an arm and leg.
