Hey Pine. I think we adopted our bunny from the same shelter! In fact I'm sure of it! I have a friend here in eastern CT who is also looking to get some angoras for fiber (she spins and knits as well). She asked me about going there but I told her she might as well not bother since she'll need to house them outside due to her husband's allergies.

Maybe the animals there have become like pets to these people -- or -- the people are so distorted in their beliefs that no one can actually "pass their standard". As for being kept in a barn.... and you can't keep'em in a barn.... *?* What? That makes NO SENSE at all !!!

You've done the right - they're doing the wrong - by not getting the animals into caring homes. Are they still a shelter, or have they become hoarders, and no one has put out the word yet - ?

I think of all the rescues, rabbit rescues are really 'the worst' when it comes to unreasonable expectations. I'm sorry for your experience but it sounds like things worked out well!

We recently had a case near where I live in that a liscensed rescue organization really turned out to be an appalling hoarding case. Over 200 animals had to be rescued from this "rescuer". In my opinion, this has become a serious problem in our country. Hoarders can be quite militant, so they sound like they are really protecting the animals in their care. But in true hoarding, the animals are usually kept in bad conditions. Hoarding is a psychological disorder, and these people need treatment for it - not more animals to hoard!

Not sure if that's the situation where this rabbit rescue is, but if you suspect that might be the case, don't hesitate to report it. Being liscensed does not mean that they are regularly inspected.

If it makes you feel any better, we were filling out an adoption application for a cat, and they actually asked how old our window screens were.

And I also heard that the rabbit rescue group in MN told someone that they mine as well forget about getting a pet rabbit because they WORK during the day. What?! Everyone works!

I also heard that the Humane Society in MN has one of the highest euthenization rates in the US. That makes me so mad!

I have had good experiences with animal rescues too though. I'm fostering a dog right now. And I walked dogs at another animal shelter, and they were awesome! So they aren't all bad...

ok i cant help it.. here is the best rescue story we heard in a while.

some well meaning folks were telling us how sad it was that the local 'rescue' had some 'hard to place pigs." we nodded and said oh geez thats too bad.

until we got into the car. then we screamed with laughter and almost drove off the road because we were laughing so hard. hard to place pigs! heck you just place them there on the plate between the eggs and the 'taters! there's nothing hard to place about ham!

and yes we raise our own pigs for breakfast lunch and dinner. i keep wondering where people think their food comes from... hum...

People say,"oh, you shouldn't have got that (insert type of animal here), you should have gotten one from a rescue" Honestly, most animals get stuck at rescues. So I get animals that haven't been there yet. I realize they think they know what they're doing, but they don't. The funny thing is, the rules for adopting wild horses make much more sense. For instance, you need a ten foot high wooden fence. They don't recognize wire as a barrier, and they'd try to jump anything shorter.

Oh yes, letting angoras grow hair is inhumane. They suffer, it's so hard being cute AND fluffy!

gee, i could place some of those pigs, i love bacon-i mean pigs.
