If we make a sign for the end of our driveway that says "Duck Eggs"

I currently gather eggs and give them a quick wash with super hot water to remove poop and stuff. Then put them in the fridge.
If I'm going to put the eggs out at the end of the driveway with the sign...
Should I skip the refrigeration bit or is it fine to refrigerate until I put them outside. And how long are they ok if they sit outside?

Do you trust kids in your neighborhood. Really were I live they raid mail boxes, which makes me worry about leaving eggs out. I would refrigerate them and have customers see you. I have a friends that has a small shed on his property with a small fridge in it and eggs cartons on top. His entire neighborhood knows that, they come get eggs, and drop the money in the mail box in that shed. Works really good for him. Oh he only has chicken eggs.

It's fine to refrigerate them first, and if the weather is cool you can leave them out for days without them going bad. Of course, the cooler they are and the fresher they are, the better. Some people put them in a cooler so they stay cool, but it's up to you.

As for theft, there is a legitimate possibility of that, especially if there's money involved. However, a friend of mine says he always put their produce at the end of the driveway "on the honor system." They only once had someone steal anything--just change out of a jar--and they saw the girls who did it. When the girls came back to the stand another day, they gave them some free produce and made friends with them. The girls never stole again--in fact, one of them snuck back and put money back in the jar a few days later. I think most of the time, people do the right thing if given the right conditions.

Here, by the way, is my friend's blog: www.lifegrower.com . It's a great read, and he has many more really cool, funny, make-you-cry stories like that and many even better.
