Few weeks ago I had chicken I believed had Canker. Treated and all better.. now I have another sick one but different symptoms. This chick I noticed night before drooling.. I brought in and gave her metronidazole. (Thinking maybe canker since contagious). Today she still inside has not eaten and is worse. Head tilted to side, raspy labored breathing. I checked her over I don’t feel anything unusual but not sure I know what would be unusual. I attached some pics. Also I noticed little clumps of I believe poo directly under vent attached to base of feathers . Any ideas.??

Those clumps are lice eggs, so your flock has lice, but that's not related to the respiratory issues. Still, the whole flock should be treated - either pick up some Sevin or permethrin dust (not permethrin if you have cats because it will kill them), dust the birds with the dust, clean the coop out and dust it down too, and then repeat in ten days, or get some Ivermection pour on and treat them with that.

Now, the trouble you're having could possibly be another case of canker - it is technically contagious if the birds are sharing a waterer and feeder with the infected bird. I would be disinfecting all feeders and waterers. However, it only survives in feed and water for a matter of hours, so another bird catching it weeks later would mean it would have had to have been reintroduced by the original source, likely an infected wild bird eating or drinking from the feeder.

Canker can also block off a chicken's windpipe when it gets severe enough and suffocate them, so that could be what's happening here.

Or, it's a respiratory disease. With there having been weeks between the two cases, and with this hen having breathing issues, this is definitely something to consider. A respiratory disease CAN cause mucus buildup in the mouth.

So if I were you I'd think about treating her with something for a respiratory illness, like Tylan, and also think about getting testing for respiratory diseases done, since they leave the affected birds carriers for life, meaning you would either need to close your flock, never selling or giving away birds, or cull all your birds, wait a couple weeks, and then start over with birds that are free of the disease.

Ugh.. What to do.. I guess saturday will have major coop cleaning and dust for lice. I guess I assumed they would have lost feathers or something.
Also, Is Lice contagious (human) because thinking about it makes me itch??

I went to local feed store today no Tylan til next week.

Could this just be a simple respiratory infection? Or anything in this category severe??

I do have my new young birds (9 & 6 weeks) in the same coop as this chicken was. The 9 week olds have been free ranging this last week but the 6 week old are caged up. I don't plan on selling chicks or breeding. No Roosters, just do this for eggs for me and extended family/friends. I guess i will have to watch them closely.

Luckily bird lice is not contagious to people, only other birds.

The bad news with respiratory stuff in poultry is that it's all pretty serious. Most diseases that are contagious leave the birds carriers for life. There is one disease that is caused by a fungus that can be cured and doesn't leave the birds carriers, and there is a slight chance it's something like pneumonia, but that wouldn't be contagious. That's why testing is important - a lab called Zoologix will run a panel for $98 and only need swabs from the sick chicken's mouth to do it.

I will definitely look into that!! We've been in the mid 90's here and i was hoping it was heat the first night but when she got worse I sorta think upper respiratory!

I would treat with the metronidazole for 5-6 days. I agree, that is a good picture of lice eggs. I would use the permethrin 10 spray. Buy the concentrate and read the label for mixing for chickens, and use a handsprayer. Use about 15 ml per chicken around and under the vent. Treat at least twice at 10 day intervals. Empty your coop bedding, spray the coop, nests, and roosts with the permethrin, and replace with new bedding.
