Another Southern Carport Coop

We chose to do this with the roosts instead. Happy about it. Need to figure out something for that open wall in the back to add a little bit of rain protection, but we've got some time, I think.




This is not going to work for the older girls, and probably not my up and coming layers, but it's what I've got right now lol


Some pics of the "built-in" apron. We figured it would be more beneficial to pull the HC from the coop itself out on the ground. Trim will be going over the wood portions and the metal sections were screwed in with a washer to hold it in place.

Decided to just go with chicken wire on the inside. I probably should do something up to the roof as well, to keep nosy birds from trying to fly across from the roosts.




You know I needed help.




And yay! The in-coop brooder is mostly livable! (I have 18 almost 3-week old chicks waiting on this space!


Going through the pics I have, I realized I've missed a few areas. Will try to get those pics in soon. So far, I'm really pleased with the coop and am glad we made the plunge

It's a bit close, but the birds actually prefer to roost on top of the lattice panel on the left. I suspected that would happen.

Also, the gap in that pic is from me pulling the roof away from the side. The roof panel was screwed back down.

I was thinking the same about the top roost bar but overall I love the way this turned out. Fantastic job!

I had too much going on to get pics this evening so that'll happen another day. I did put some HC along the bottom of the in-coop brooder pen for in the future, to try to deter any escapees or pecking. Also, I think I can get another length of lattice to attach to the top of the brooder wall and nestle it in one of the grooves of the roof to block that possibility. I need to lay down some more HC at the doors tomorrow and we still need to get some trim up, and maybe some pieces painted a different color.

If we ever move, I think we might actually see if someone can pick this thing up and move it with us

We've had some really heavy rains today and I got a glimpse at just how horrible the dish pan nest box idea is on that back wall

Gonna hafta get creative with something to put back there to keep the rain out. Ho hum.

FWIW, I built my nest boxes out of plywood, except I put wire bottoms in them. 1/2" x 1" welded wire. Hardware cloth would so the same. The wire bottoms drain and are easier to keep clean as any broken eggs, dust, etc. falls out the bottom. Fill them with a light fluffy material like hay or straw to cushion the eggs and they work fine.

I think this wide open car port coop idea is a good one for southern growers. We talk a lot about the Woods fresh air coop, but read his book and you find he had plans for something similar to this carport for southern states. It was made of wood, but the idea is pretty much the same.

Even in some norther areas, these could be outfitted with metal sides and one end enclosed. The single car versions, enclosed on three sides, presents the same air cushion potential as a Woods coop. It might even be a good quick and dirty alternative to the box store garden shed option?

I pulled the broken dog kennel from the other coop that went so unused that I completely overlooked it for a while as just another "part" of the coop

That'll buy some time. I think I might try the storage tote idea where you cut an access hole in the side of it. It would make moving a broody to the in-coop brooder WAY easier! Either way, *someone* has already been investigating the dog kennel and made a cozy little butt imprint in it. I'm good with that.

I REALLY liked having the framed option with the carport already done for us. It's cozy in there and I imagine it could be closed in rather well and easily. I have a friend in KY who is taking the carport idea for herself, but obviously, making it more cold weather sturdy. I've heard of the Woods coop, but haven't read a whole lot about it.
