I have a hen with a very swollen foot from bumblefoot. I’ve been soaking the foot and trying to remove all of the infection. I’ve not been successful taking out the plug. Instead I’m getting some very thick tissue and blood. I think she should be on antibiotics. My options are Bactrim, ciprofloxacin or amoxicillin. Would any of those work and in what dosage?

Welcome to BYC. Any of those antibiotics can work for bumblefoot. Amoxicillin dosage is 57 mg per pound twice a day. If you have 250 mg I would just give 1 twice a day. The baytril or bactrim dosage would depend on what you have. Soaking the foot in warm Epsom salts for 30 minutes a day may help. Do you have any pictures? Here is a good article about treatment:

This is the type of infection that would respond beautifully to the homeopathic remedy HEPAR SULPHURIS CALCAREUM. Everyone knows why we should try our best to avoid using antibiotics - they mess up the gut flora and invite fungal infections and there's also the problem of creating antibiotic resistance. I'll let Joette Calabrese (world renowned as I'm finding out)) do the talking.

Only wanted to add that Hepar sulph. is very interesting because at the beginning of an infection, it will prevent pus from forming and will heal, but once pus has started to form, it will hasten the pointing of an abscess and the evacuation of the infection.
You should also know that there was a case not too long ago https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/broken-toe-bumblefoot-got-infection.1308876/. Unfortunately, after oral antibiotics as prescribed by a vet, the infection didn't go away and the toe had to be amputated.

If you decide to get Hepar Sulph. please post and I'll be back with how to store, handle, administer and - very important- the dosage.

I can try to get pictures today when I work on her. I am normally alone so it’s really hard to do the surgery and get images The ciprofloxacin is 500 mg and the Amoxicillin is 250. I’m not sure what the bactrim dosage is. I’m assuming 500 since it was a prescription for me, but I found out that I’m highly allergic to it so I have an entire prescription left.

I have never given antibiotics for any of the bumblefoot that I have seen over the years. Most times, if surgery was needed, I just removed the plug of solid pus, and dressed the wound. But if you think the infection warrants antibiotics, that is up to you, and I just was answering your question in my last post. I would try the soaks and possibly try to open the scab and squeeze more first before giving AB’s.

I've been fighting bumble foot with one of my hens for weeks now and just stumbled on this thread. Thank you for suggesting this alternative. How much heparin sulph should be given?

I have the same problem happening & I want to treat her with antibiotic. I have purchased Tylan 50 & Oxytetracycline 100. Will one of these work? If so how where & how much do I inject? Does anyone know?

Are you dealing with bumblefoot? Can you start a new thread of your own, and post a picture with more details?
