Antibiotics for Pet Birds and Fish

My vet retired. I can't even have a fecal done on a chicken anymore.

There are a couple vets here that see parrots, etc. They will tell you they know nothing about poultry. Just the office visit was $300 last i checked. Their usual advice is cull.
Not helpful.
True that. I have two B&G macaws and they need checkups every 10 years. I was a few years behind on their second one so went searching and found we got a new avian vet 20 miles away. I was elated. While there, I struck up a convo about chickens and got told no farm animals yet. Well, that was hopeful. Maybe in a few years she'll be able to.

I wondered when the end to this would come. It seemed sort of odd we could just buy 250 or 500 mg of Amoxicillin and as much as we wanted. I bought a bottle of AquaMox a few weeks ago from Chewy as I had a hen I was getting worried about.

I wonder if we can freeze it to prolong its shelf life.
Looked on Chewy today, AquaMox no longer even listed. I saw 1 antibiotic only.

I saw that too, but it's still available online, and perhaps in person at pet stores that sell aquariums/fish.

Just an FYI. You can go on line and find sites that will tell you the dosage of common antibiotics for use in poultry. Lots of us have a 'few' antibiotics squirreled away from our latest run in with bronchitis, sore throats for example.

It will take some 'ciphering' as Jethro Bodine used to say but it is doable.

This is a serious blow to pet owners who do not have access to veterinary care for their chickens, ducks or other poultry. We do not have an exotic animal vet anywhere near us.

I mean seriously. Can you imagine having to put a sick 2$ gold fish in a bag of water to a vet to find out what is wrong with it and finding out you will be charged 500$ because the vet treats exotic animals....and by the time you get the fish home it's belly up from oxygen depravation?

There is more to this than meets the eye. Just saying. You can easily buy antibiotics and a lot of other drugs from Mexico and Canada without prescriptions.

I read a study or two a while back concerning it's use in commercial poultry because of antibiotic resistance. I don't have a link as it was some time ago. Guess I'll be looking around to see what I can find.

Funny thing, I also read a news article about Tyson was giving up their "no antibiotics ever" pledge. Strange timing.
Tyson has also partnered with a global insect company. Just throwing this here, fyi y'all. Insect protein in our chicken? I'll pass
