ANTS

I have a serious ant problem. I have tried many different things around my house and yard and have made some progress. I need some suggestions however on what to use around my coup and where my chickens forage. I want something safe because we eat the eggs. Thanks!

Perhaps Grits? I know it kills the ants because they eat too much and it swells in their stomach..... I don't know if chickens would do the same, perhaps someone else will know.

I do know DE kills ants and does nothing to chickens! (Diatomaceous earth)

I had carpenter ants eating one of my barn stalls/chicken coop. I spread the DE around the whole barn and dumped it heavy duty where I could see damage. Haven't seen an ant since. You must re-spread after it gets wet.

I have a terrible ant problem also. I can’t tell you how much money I’ve spent trying to get rid of them. I’ve tried DE and that’s a joke, it didn’t work for me. I have them in my house, my yard, trees, flower beds and even in my vehicle. I finally broke down and called an exterminator last week. He didn’t treat the yard, just the house and outside parameter.

I found a poison made by Spectracide called Triazicide. It’s a liquid that you hook to your garden hose to treat the yard and it seems to be working. I didn’t let my chickens out for two weeks after I treated the yard just to be safe, and it’s rained a couple of times since then. I did buy bait traps to put in the coop and attached them high enough out of the chickens reach. So far it’s been working great. Hopefully my ant nightmare is over. Good luck!

The perfect thing you need which is not a spray and the chickens cannot get into is a product called "Grants Ant Stakes". They are contained in a little metal container on one end and a stake on the other. Place these stakes every six feet around your house, barn etc. They also make some without stakes to place inside your house.

The ants carry the "goods" back to the nest and it kills the whole colony.

Best stuff on earth. I never have ants anywhere with this stuff. If you can't find it locally where you are, try a Google search to see where you can find it.

If you use DE, please, make sure it is Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth!

Food grade DE does work on ants, you just have to be diligent when using it. It is not a "1 hit wonder"...I've had severe ant populations reduced/disappear with using DE everyday, for 3 days, where the ant problem is.

Hi, try home defense by Ortho, find it in Home Depot or Walmart. After it dries, it is safe for pets (except my Boston Terrier). I have eliminated ants with it. Karen
