How do you keep from smearing with charcoal?

I use a piece of paper under my wrist to prevent major smudging, but when it does happen, I typically just clean it up with a good eraser. Using a higher density charcoal also helps alot too.

Can I ask what's giving you trouble? It's a tricky subject sometimes, especially variables and such.

Well, I'd have to show you a picture of what kind I'm doing, but we're working on multi-step and single-step equations.
If you'd like to help, any pointers would be greatly appreciated since I'm always looking for a simpler way to do math

That would probably be a good idea, especially because explaining algebra can result in long posts.

Here are some pieces I did in my art class at school:
Watercolor painting of an old garage a block from the school, took me 2 hours with pencil, and 1 hour with paint.

Graphite and charcoal wolf, took around 4-6 hours total. My favorite drawing so far!
