When I first saw the drawing my first thought was Bear. It wasn’t until I went back and looked again that I saw it actually was BearI didn’t realize anyone would put two and two together and figure out Bear = Dr Mikes dog.

Then there’s me who just draws proportions by making blobs in the right spots and figuring it out from there.My favorite is also Hedgie. Least favorite is the chestnut gelding.
As for the hard edges that Amer mentioned: Draw your outlines VERY lightly and fill in the shapes focusing only on shadows, midtones, and highlights. Use soft short strokes to very gradually get your darker values and to avoid the streaks. Be patient!
What kind of paper are you using? Paper can make a big difference! Softer pencils also create darker darks for better contrast.
For accurate proportions: The grid method is good and the smaller the grid squares the more accurately you will draw.

There's nothing wrong with that. I like using loose shapes to draw animals.
