I'd like to start a little on breeding some bettas. I currently have a red crowntail male, a steely blue male and a almost white female. Will the colors vary? Why type on enviroment do I need for them? I've read that the male should make the bubble nest first and then introduce the female to the male in his own tank. Any adivce would be greatfull!!! I love these fish!

http://www.bettatalk.com has good breeding info that i was gonna fallow. I would need a huge grow out tank and lots of individual jars for males and i would have to set up worm cultures. It just seemed too much of a commitment since the stores want yr old males.

I have 5 females together and a male in another tank.

great link.
However you can breed them without all of that.
I bred them for a year, and I now have 66 started with 3.

when your male sees the female does he get excited (fans tail or swims circles?)

Males may attack the females to show their dominance, sometimes a little too much (you gotta know when to call it quits and try another day). After the male "squeezes" the eggs out of the female you have to take her out of the tank and leave the rest up to the male. he will keep the eggs in the bubble nest, picking them up with his mouth and putting them back when they fall out. once they hatch, if i remember correctly, you have to take the male out also (he might eat them). i once set up a 55 gallon tank for my sister in law with CO2 tank with delivery setup, proper lighting (not your regular flourescent bulbs), with plants and fish galore. btw, no mechanical filter. all the live plants, gravel (full of bacteria and worms) served as a natural filter. all she had to do was thin out the plants, add evaporated water and do water changes every now and then. it was packed with fish & baby fish everywhere!!! i know in the initial stages of growth they need tiny food, vinegar eels if i recall correctly and just crushed (until its basically a powder) flake food for the later stages.

a 55g set up the way i described would be a great grow out tank or a tank just for the girls, im assuming after a certain point you would have to separate all the males (never raised them to that stage)

Yes both of the males do. I lost my red crowntail male due to ich from some Tetras I had in there. The bettas I have are just from the store they aren't good quality ones. Last weekend I bought another young crowntail male (I believe) He has much shorter fins then the last one but he is a real looker. The new female I have is a white body with red fins. They are all separated right now but my steely blue male has a bubble nest covering about half of his tank.
I will try and get some pictures of them when I get the camera.

Thanks for the info joseney21!!!

If you're seriously interested in bettas maybe you should consider joining the IBC (International Betta Congress).

There are many US members on their email list, as well as some in Asia and south America. Most of the US breeders have bred them for years and could be very helpful.
