Well I do love my six 4 1/2 week old RIR girls but they just don't seem to be the sharpest knifes in the drawer. every day I have to clean the pine chips out of their chick feeder. They don't realize thet all the scratching they do is covering their food. So when I do uncover their food they go nuts because they were so hungry and they didn't know there was food under the chips. Any body else have sipmleton chicks.

I constantly tell my chicks that if they were smarter, people wouldn't want to eat them.

I'm amazed at how truly "special" they are some times!

I had one that got itself trapped behind the same bale of hay every flipin' day

That's why I named him diner. Survival of the fittest, it's only a matter of time

If you can raise up your feeder then they won't be able to scratch the feed in as easy.Best thing I did was hang mine to their back height, can always put a branch or stick close to it for them to stand on if you have different size chicks.

LOL that's hilarious!!!
Mine are a week old and they fling their pine shavings everywhere when scratching. I wake up and go check on them this morning and their waterer is FILLED with shavings!

OH LOL and I was doing something... filling the feeder maybe and I reach my hand in there and a chick flips out and jumps and goes running into the wall. SMACK.
LOL poor chicky. I felt so bad but I laughed so hard.
The chicks okay by the way.

Lol I love how they are just so.... so........
chickeny!

Editted to say: When the chicks were only a few days old they would peck at their toes and screech. Multiple times in a row. This was them:
Peck. Screech. Peck! Screech! PECK! SCREEEECH!
You'd think someone was murdering them by the sounds they made pecking at their own toes lol!

They do the same in the waterer also. so I put it ontop of a brick and it helps alot. As for the food I will have to do the same. I love watching them scratch it cracks me up!
