I work for a university in a state where the budget for higher education is discretionary.

We've been asked to cut budgets by 13-20%!!! The local unions are suing the governor b/c their pay raises aren't in the budget. Positions like mine that aren't union are going to get cut in the long run if the unions are successful in "saving their own". It'll be on the backs of non-union members.

I'm just praying that my job, and others like mine, are preserved.

ETA: I do study abroad-type work and my numbers are down about 25% this year. We had to cut one of our 5 programs.

I know what you all are saying about feeling the pinch. I am partners with one of my sons. We are general contractor/carpentry specialising in custom homes. We haven't built a new home in two years. Our customer base is the only thing keeping us afloat. Been doing alot of remods and repairs but the jobs seem to keep getting further and further apart. Plus the competion for jobs is crazy. Michigan has the worst economy in the nation and I think we still haven't hit bottom. The only up side is I have alot more time to spend on BYC, got to look for the bright side. Hang in there everyone.

So sorry everyone...it is much the same here...the job layoffs lately have been dreadful.......

and lets all pray things improve sooner rather than later.....

If nothing else I say we all encourage everyone we know to garden this year. Atleast we won't starve that way. Plus if we plant enough to give some away it's less likely that riot's will occur.
