Do the brassicas cross pollinate? I've never had trouble, but only have saved kale and radish seed before. Just got some kale seed pulled yesterday, need to clean them out of pods. Might have some varietal kale crosses, which is OK with me. I selected for aphid resistance and slow bolting.I agree about seeds, where I live and probably where you are there is lots of wild brassica and so I’ve been spending my quarantine time hand pollinating my turnips and radishes and bok Choi And Cabbage. Today I’m worried though bout that riot coming through Redding.
I see what you're saying, there are a lot of uncultivated brassicas around. Guess I'll hope for the best, but don't anticipate problems with the kale seeds. I didn't grow broccoli or cabbage last spring, and the spinach I've let go to seed has a Completely different flower structure. Must not be same species. Speaking of which-- Ever try so save carrot seed? I've been told they cross pollinate easily with queen anne's lace so have never tried. And that stuff is all over the place here. They don’t cross with each other if they aren't the same species. So Kale, (Mainly Brassica Oleracea), can cross with other B. Oleraceas such as broccoli and cabbage. There is a cure for this though which is only letting one bolt at a time, but the problem is in Redding there Are ALOT of wild brassicas such as wild radish or field mustard.
No pollination problems with them so far? That's good to know, next time I have carrots in the ground maybe I'll save a few. I like those little round carrots, I forget the name of the variety, but would love to get my hands on some seed.I save carrot seed but hand do it.
I have saved carrot seed. The results were not good. Most tended to become woody and start blooming very quickly.I see what you're saying, there are a lot of uncultivated brassicas around.
