any cattle people out there!!!

We are new cows as well, but we went with the miniatures!! We have to full Herefords (1 bull, 1 heifer) a Hereford/shorthorn cross( heifer) and a Belted Galloway ( heifer (for sale)).. All are just at a year now except the Beltie, she's just at 2, and we love them... They originally were purchased for beef, as we live on a smaller sized property. But we have really grown to love them and are considering raising in the future.

This is my Registered Jersey Heifer-Zoey. I showed her in FFA. Very Loveable and easy to train. got frist in Show and 3rd in showmanship. Showmanship day she went into heat and there was a bull in my showmanship class soo things didnt go to well. She loved to be around people

Hey There! The start of calving is just around the corner! Anyone getting ready? I still have wait another year for mine but im still nervous on breeding for the first time!
I sure hope that I can see my heifer soon and snap a couple of pics for an update. Shes at my uncles just for the winter. but Spring will come soon enough!

I grew up on my Grandpas dairy. It was my job to bring in the cattle every night for milking. I started dating my husband at this time. He would call me up and ask me out, and I would always reply,"Well OK but not till after I bring the cows in and take a shower." So he would always show up early just to watch me bring all those cows into the barn and lock them in stantions for milking. He even tried to help one time, and found out that they would not let him lock them in. They all backed out.

I guess he found my magical power with them very intriging.
So here it is all these years later and I so miss having cattle.

I have been wanting to get some so bad. And he steadfast refuses. So I am kinda bummed. So what do you all think about mini cattle?? Mabey I could get some of them. I would have to be able to do it all on my own because he would definately not help. I just have missed my raw milk since the day Grandpa got rid of the cattle.

Please talk to me I am open for suggestions.

We have 20 head of registered Texas Longhorns, and we should have 13 calves in the spring! I love calving season, and April can't get here soon enough! I milked for years and helped run a small dairy when I met my husband. He knew I wanted cows, so instead of milk cows we wound up with longhorns!! We tried a few different breeds, like herefords and zebus but it wasn't a good fit. My hubby hates maintenance, and 'normal' pets, thus the longhorns. I am still working on him and trying to get a cow to milk, but so far no luck

MaryMouse you could check into mini longhorns! They are smaller, and longhorns in general require less winter feed, they have fewer health issues, and are very docile. I'm hoping for a mini jersey, which might work for you too!! I have some Amish friends and thats what they milk. She gives a little over a gallon a day, plus she feeds her calf, so that is plenty of milk for most families. Good luck with your search!!

Longhorns and Chickens, Thankyou for the suggestion. The mini Jersey sounds perfect. Thats exactly what I wanted to do. I was thinking about having the calf on her all day, then next to each other in stalls but unable to drink at night, so I could milk in the am. That amount of milk is perfect too. We drink a gallon a day, and we hold ourselves back cause its so darn expensive. I remember the last day we had milk my Grandpa put a huge glass container of it in my fridge. When i came home from work at saw it I bawled. I knew it was the last.

I also missed sorely his home grown beef. I had culture shock buying it at the grocery store. You know I really think I am the only one in the family that took it so hard. Were would one find a mini jersey?

look at diiferent cattle site...like... www.steerplanet.com or www.showsteers.com

Those websites are geared towards beef breed show cattle. It is very very unlikely that anyone would have miniature jerseys on there. Most of them probably don't think much of dairy OR miniature breeds. LOL

All of our cows are open right now. We had planned to AI this fall but with the drought all of our cows are pretty underweight, so their conception rates would be pretty low. We are looking into buy a bull to turn out with them right now. Either way probably no calves until next fall or winter for us.
