Any clues what I got and how I can determine gender? Pics included

Here's another where you can see the difference between the reds and the sex links

No need to fret, they look exactly like my comets(girls). Like tonijohnson927 said, RIR don't have the creamy white feathers. If they were male sex link they'd be white/cream with some having a little reddish brown here and there. Good Luck!

Your chicks look just like my Red Sex Links, and if they aren't for some reason they look very hennish to me

Good Luck, but I think those 4 are all hens !

Hi Heather,
The person who sold you the 'araucanas' that turned out to be EEs was probably not lying to you. The hatcheries, feed stores, and many ebay sellers all sell their EEs as americanas, ameraucanas, and araucanas. He/she probably bought his chicks from one of these sources and doesn't understand the difference.

The red chicks are red sexlinks (golden comets), so this seller is not lying either. Golden comets, red stars, and cinnamon queens are all names for red sexlink chickens. A red sexlink is a cross between 2 different breeds. The purpose of crossbreeding these 2 chickens is to make sexing them simple - the good news is that your golden comets are all pullets - if they were roos, they would be mostly white.

Production red chicks do not have white feathers - they are basically hatchery Rhode island reds (bred for egg production and not as heavy & dark as the breeder birds.

I agree on the araucana/EE thing. He probably was saying what the hatchery said. Privett hatchery sent a local feedstore a label for their EEs that read ARAUCANA. That's why I allowed for the possibility that he just didnt know any better on those. The BRs are where you were really burned.

I feel a bit better. Just seeing a post saying the mix that makes a golden comet and knowing thats now what mine were just freaked me out. I was on a bit of a pissy hormonal high yesterday. I know for sure they were from a RIR and a Buff Orpington. He showed me the parents and such while I was asking questions. As long as they are girls I am good. I just can't handle having to put any others on the path to the freezer. I been cuddling the crap out of all of these and any more roos would just be very upsetting.

Same here, they look like the red sex links I got from Mt. Healthy. Good news is, that makes them girls!

Wow, what a lot of good information you got.

Just adding my two cents. They look like my 6 week old pullets. About the same size. I think you've got hens.

By he way, that little "chickadee" in the blue shirt is awful cute. Keep him!

Just backing up what everyone else has said. They look just like my RSLs and they are pullets. If they were roos there'd be a LOT of white.
