Any deaf BYCers?

Wonderful of you to try to connect with those that could be hearing impaired

If more citizens of the world reached out to those that may be considered 'less advantageous', what a wonderful world we would live in

Thank you! I've always been taught to never judge a person, and I know that deaf people have a much more difficult time connecting with hearing people. I attended a play at the deaf school here in CA with a few friends and it really opened my eyes to the deaf community. They are much more close knit and after leaving, I felt like I was the one with the disability! Its been a pretty amazing journey through these past oh, 12 weeks?

You're exactly right! I've known many deaf people, who have no disability lol. A very god friend of mine who happens to be deaf, along with his deaf wife, have raised 2 wonderful children, 1 deaf, 1 not. The father coaches his deaf daughter's softball team, and the family is just wonderful. I love this family and the fact that they seem to have zero disabilities in spite of the fact they are deaf, is just awe inspiring!!!!

Yup! Learning ASL is really fun too! You HAVE to use facial expressions or you get no point across and its great being able to act like a goofball while talking to people because your excitement and expressions let them know you're really enjoying the conversation with them.

Debi, The world would be a cold, dark place if I didnt act like my crazy self.

I believe the deaf community is a highly misunderstood bunch of people. YES they can drive. YES they can work. YES they can do ANYTHING you or I can do and the ONLY thing they cannot do is hear. Some people call them disabled. HA! Not a chance. Some of the most intelligent people I know are deaf, and in community service for others that are NOT deaf.

Did I yell too much?

There is no doubt at all that they are misunderstood. My best friend and I sign when we go to the store most of the time, and never speak at all. You wouldnt believe the looks we get. Its like we're a freak show, so I cant even imagine what it would be like to not be able to speak up and tell people to mind their own business.

Nope, you dont yell enough!

Jordan, they are close knit. Because they are typically viewed as being disabled and that cannot be further from the truth.

Agreed again! Many people thing of different as disable, which is far from the truth.

LOL that's hilarious!! you walk in signing, and when ppl look at you funny, you give them a piece of your mind?? That's so awesome!! LOL

LOL, yeah! It completely throws them off guard. Its not only good practice for us, but its also interesting to see how people act. I was going to the store with my mom the other day and we had a test in ASL the next day, so I took my book and I was practicing in the car. We were at a stop light and the lady in the car next to us just sat there and stared at me, and then pointed at me and her daughter started staring at me. Apparently she didnt get the, "Its not polite to point" memo.

Me too!!! And that website is a great tool! It shows the CORRECT signs, not like some others out there that have your thinking you are saying breakfast when you are really saying Beotch, in church, in front of the pastor's wife.

One reason Deaf people may not declare themselves on a forum like this is not wanting to be viewed or treated any differently or making themselves "vulnerable"(think of trolls/flame warriors etc).

Kev, great point there. I didnt think of it. Sorry to anyone of the deaf community out there I may have offended or caused to put up your guard. It was not my intention at all!
