you're using photoshop?
things to check on the paint bucket:
- make sure all the borders of your intended area meet and there aren't any blank pixels where the paint can escape into other adjacent areas
- check to see what you've got for feathering/antialiasing - how many color steps away before it stops selecting cells to paint into
- try using the magic wand to select an area before you paint into it... you may see you're selecting areas you don't mean to and can subtract those out of the selection before you pour the paint in.

yep, 4

i made sure on that
well the thing is, it goes into the box, but if i try to do a new layer is covers it all over the page

i tried everything i know that would make it were the paint would stay in the box, but no go >.<

try reselecting the color area before repainting (magic wand is good here)
try reducing the antialiasing/feathering threshhold
make sure you're on the same layer as the color you want to replace (sometimes you're on another layer and it's blank, so the color goes on the whole layer)

i try to do layers so that if need be, i can delete the layer if i hate it

ok, I read that more carefully...
if you're on a new layer, the color applies to whats on that new layer... since there's nothing on the new layer to interupt the flow (all the lines are on the layer below), it fills the whole layer.
if you want to change the existing color with the paint bucket, select the color on the layer where it currently exists, not on the new layer.

if you want to make an overlay on the new layer, go to the old layer, select the color you're overlaying with the magic wand, switch to the new layer, and use your bucket. the selection area you created on the first layer can be used while you're parked on the new layer too.

basically you need to create a perimeter for the bucket to pour into.
on the layer with the lines, the lines create the perimeter.
on your new layer, the page edge is the only perimeter you have, until you create a selection area.

also, the magic wand selects things on the current layer. so if you're on the new (blank) layer and use the wand, it's going to select the whole page. that's why you have to go to the layer with the lines to use the magic wand, then change to the new layer while that area is still selected to get the bucket to do what you want.

Here with my very first picture of 2012 ~

I got a bit of help from a friend of mine on DeviantART, but this is what I got in the end.
She drew the lanterns, I did everything else. x'D
I just wanted to finish it on time for the New Year, even if I'm a little late.

Any news from you all ?
