As for hand-turning.

No one is quite sure at what point hand-turning equals auto-turning for hatch rates. Minimum recommended is 3 times, max practical is probably 7 or 9.

What we do know is that turning is most crucial in the first 14 days, and that hens turn eggs roughly every 30 mins.

There is probably a law of diminishing returns in there somewhere, on your way to your first auto-turner

I'm using what I call the "gumpsgirl" method with the soft stuff over the wire. (see pic above)

I can just roll it up and throw it away as soon as the hatch is over with the cartons and empty egg shells. (all of them empty I hope)

lol ... just make sure that whatever you use it allows full and free passage of air. If it doesn't it could compromise RH, just at a time when RH required is the most difficult to acheive.

I agree completly, I dont understand why people are going to act like we are stupid just because we are novice. I am using an egg carton also but pro hatcheries have auto turners that have egg crates. What is the difference other than we manually move the carton. And I dont believe that hatcheries turn by hand. So, I ask what exactly is the contraversey over??? Amd novice people can find out what is resonable and what is not.
Thanks -jay1995

There is no controversy over using an egg carton as a turner.

The difficulties arise when it is suggested that the eggs remain in the carton through hatching.

No one has suggested that novices are stupid, just that they are novices. The learning curve is steep, and it is my view that learning is best done mastering accepted practises first, before branching out and trying *other* techniques.

Well, leaving the eggs in the carton during hatching works for me. Mom2Cool, you'll just have to try it yourself and let us know how it goes, 'k? I'm just going to leave it at that...

Ok first I love your name but have such a hard time addressing you as AK-Bird-Brain.... LOL

2nd I hadn't meant to start an arguement but just wanted some pics of the egg carton menthod & perhaps some pointers from others who've tried this. I didn't realize it would turn into a thing & I apologize if I'd unintentionally opened a can of worms.

AWE man Tori why'd ya have to go and start a fight (just kiddin) I am a novice and used the method Tori mentioned. it worked for me I got 8 babies from 24 shipped eggs ( have 2 cracked eggs, and about 8 blood rings. I would have gotten more but I messed up the humidity (it was raining in there) I removed the embryos and I noticed that EVERY single one was in the most perfect position ever.... I just drowned them. I think that you shoudl try what ever you are comfy with... its a learning experience! you have to learn from your mistakes!

That's how I chose my name. Mrs. AKBB is cool, though. Or Tori.
No worries... like AK_button_mama said, you just do what you're comfortable with. I guess I get carried away with sharing my experiences sometimes...
