Hello, I am new at getting ducks this year and really am looking for a duck that will produce lot's of eggs. I have heard of the Khaki breed and the Ancona breed and have heard that khaki is awesome at laying eggs but not sure about ancona, like them for there looks I guess.

Also, when does Orscheln Farm and Home start selling ducks?

I'm looking into getting ducks this coming spring also. This chart from Metzer Farms might give you some information that will be helpful when comparing duck breeds (they don't sell Anconas so they are not on the chart):

No matter what breed you decide on, I'm sure you'll enjoy them!

And don't forget BYC has a great duck forum!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I'm a chicken person and don't know much about ducks (although I've had a few), but I can tell you that Khaki Campbells are the best laying ducks. I would suggest posting on our Duck section in Other Backyard Poultry under the Forum at the top of the page and taking advantage of our duck experts there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

I have a question,

What is the benefit of only having 5 hens. I am just doing a little trial this year and wanted to get 5. I wanted to know how many eggs I will be getting per week and if it's worth it to even get hens.

The hens I am going to get ( to determine the egg production)

Road Island Red
Buff Orpington
Plymouth Rock
Wyandotte
Speckled Sussex

Welcome to BYC! Glad you joined the flock! Khaki Campbell on average lays 330 eggs a year. In second place for egg laying is the Indian Runner at 300 eggs a year. Ancona are known to lay about 280 eggs a year.

Rhode Island Reds are a good laying hen. Black Australorp and Sexlinks are some of the best brown egg layers, very hardy to the heat and cold, and very friendly. My estimate would 14-32 eggs a weeks. More or less. Mine is just an educated guess based on the percentages I get from my Australorps.
