How do these girls act as far as getting broody? I have a few eggs I want to stick under them but not sure I have the right breed for brooding and raising chicks. They are very sweet and calm girls who will be a year this June. Thanks for your help.

The Red Stars are hybrids specifically bred to not go broody. They are bred for egg laying. There have been stories of Stars going broody, but it's not very likely. None of mine have ever showed even the slightest sign of broodiness.

I have no experience with RIRs.

I'm told RIRs don't tend to go broody. You might want to try a Silkie or another breed that's really very broody, even if you just keep the one hen for it.

Thank you for your responses...figured as much...I have someone local who can get me a Buff Orpington - is that better than what I have now?

I have had two BO go broody. However, you can't make them go, and mine did not go broody until July!

Then they both went within two days of each other. Did a fine job. hope mine go broody closer to spring this year!
