I may be off the wall...but...
does anyone know of any info on the use of prednisone on chickens?
Since Marek's causes inflammation of nerves I wonder if this corticosteroid would be of any use and if anyone has ever tried it?
Can prednisone even be used on chickens?
TY

I've been thinking some more! A good thing??? Hmmmmm. Well anyway, here goes....
If herpes viruses in humans is treated with antivirals such as Acyclovir, wonder if THAT would work on chickens??? Yes, I know that chickens aren't people..but still I wonder! Seems with all of the people in the world that have chickens...they could find something or at least do some experimental research to try.
Anyone know anything????

Safe for what? Hatching? Maybe not. Are eggs from Marek's hens safe to eat?? If not, why? The virus is not communicable to humans, so?? I don't know, just asking.
I am not experimenting, but I have been literature searching for some time. The question about corticsteroids came to me last week and just today I started wondering about drugs like Acyclovir.

I do wish people who have/had Marek's flocks would think about what breeds they have/had and which breeds seemed to have the most losses and which the fewest. Or even, if they have it, what kind of chickens they have and do they feel like they didn't lose too many or if they lost a lot or all of that/those breed/s.

This of course in no way is scientific research!! It is based on "what I THINK" instead of real numbers.

Maybe if I cross post this on "what breed..." forum more people wold see this and reply?

Oh, yes...I agree. Drugs.

After a certain time period they will wear off like antibiotics.

It may already be known how long it takes for those meds to clear the system. Corticosteroids are produced naturally in the body. If it isn't known, someone could find out by testing the eggs everyday until they are free. For that matter, I don't even know if those would be deposited in eggs.

sorry, research was always my preferred job/past time...
