Hello. To you falconers, please tell me about red tailed hawks? i'm soon to be an apprentice and want to start out with them.

Not a licensed falconer here but I have rescued and patched up many birds if prey...redtails twice. I have a dear friend who rehabbed a redtail and released her at my wedding...I have her hood. They are wonderful raptors to start with not temperamental like peregrines or such a handful as eagles and ospreys can be. I think you will enjoy working with them. They are easily going in personality and very trainable and bond well with their keepers/handlers.

How amazing for you! I am jealous, I have always wanted to do that but just assumed (there's that hated word) that I wouldn't be allowed to. How do I go about getting started? and am I too old? I adore Red Tail Hawks.
Best wishes to you!

I looked into this, before you can get a bird you have to have someone apprentice you. Where I am it is hard to get anyone to spend time with a apprentice. It is neat tho, you have to take a test and catch your own bird. Some zoos offer raptor classes. When I get more time I will do it. It is very time consuming.

I have been interested for a very long time, I just hadn't a clue how to get started. I pretty much gave up on the idea and started rescuing parrots. Last Christmas, I had an injured owl stay with me for a few days while I found a rehabber that could take him. She talked me through giving him injections (head trauma - steroids) and feeding him F/T mice (cut into little bite sized pieces and shoved down his little beak. That was a pleasant way to spend Christmas day. (Actually, it was - I loved almost every minute of it). Everrett is recovered and released now, but, I helped. It was a good feeling. I really, really want a raptor now.
