The chicks are hatching, and the fun has just begun. This set (14 in all) was put under broody hens. I was told at the feed store that the seller said the fertile eggs were pure breeds (or at least she made attempt to keep the breeds separate), but I'm thinking likely not as stuff isn't matching up. I was told they were layer types, and some were Ameraucana (obviously the blue egg).

You can see a photo of the eggs here. (Click on "NO Image" and you get the photo...BYC isn't displaying well for some reason but the photos are there)....BTW..asked daughter to mark eggs so we would know which ones were the fertile ones from the non-fertile of the other hens...and this is what I got!

Of those that hatched from this assortment of mostly light brown eggs (no speckles), photos are below of what I've gotten (so far...but think this is likely all to hatch as eggs were older)...any help in identifying breeds would be appreciated.

All chicks are 1 day old.

Chicks #1 and #2: Below left I'm pretty sure is a Barred Rock (pretty classic). Right chick came from the small Banty sized, blue color egg...Ameraucana??? But leggs are yellow not grey-green, and I don't see tufts on cheeks. Is banty size though (and cute as a button)...btw named from their shells this is Flash (who hatched first) on right and Leonardo on left (from small blue egg).

Chicks # 3 and # 4 Welsummers???? But the egg shell color was not dark enough nor speckled. Hmmmmm. Can't be Brown Leghorn for same shell color reason. Ameraucana???? But legs are pink not grey-green or yellow and I don't think there's enough "beard and muff." Help here anyone??? (Cute as the dickens though)...BTW these came from shells marked Ms. Marvel and Spidy...so yup...that's the names.

You can see the back of the lighter colored one on the right...chick # 5 is on the left which I'll post and ask below.

Okay...and the real mystery chick...you can see the back above and the front below...no idea here. But this came from "Batman" shell, so Bats.

Sorry about the non-display of photos...cannot figure out why some of the photos display and others don't as I am uploading in the same identical way.

Thanks if you have the time and patience to click on the "No Image" and help me identify the chicks. They are shown in order of #1 through #5.

Here's my guess

#1 (left dark) Barred Rock (pretty classic example)
#2 (right) first photo...Ameraucana Banty...came from small blue egg

#3 and #4...Welsmummers? but came from light brown, smallish eggs... Ameraucanas too????

#5 mystery chick...dark grey with brown splotch on back and a bit of a dark brownish mask around eyes. Hmmmm.

Thanks again. Hopefully I can get the photos to upload better.

Ameraucanas do not have green or yellow legs they have slate legs. And ameraucans have beards so if these chicks don't then I would say theya arent ameraucanas.the one in the 4th picture looks like an easter egger, so the other one you told was an ameraucana I would say is an easter egger too.The ones you thought might be welsummers i am thinking are brown leghorns..they are identical as chicks. And the black with the white dot is a barred rock.

The ones that say no image available you can still click on them to enlarge them and the picture will show up that way.

Thanks for your input...Okay, I can believe EE. None of the chicks can be brown leghorn as the egg shell color they came from was brown...a true brown leghorn would have had a white shell.

I'm thinking these are mutts...fun mutts...but mutts.

Other than the Barred Rock in the 1st photo.

Anyone else venture to guess?

Thanks

I didnt click on the picture of the eggs, therefore I didnt realize there were no white eggs. The pics are all loaded now though.

After more internet searches, I think I may have figured out the chipmunk chicks...IF they are purebred as they seller stated. The egg characteristics (medium size, light tan) and chick color is right for a Speckled Sussex (chipmunk pattern, 4 toes, pinkish legs, no muff, color varies from buff to tan in chipmunking in same hatch).

Still have no clue about Bats, the chick with the grey/black with brown chipmunking...that has to be a mutt from everything I've seen. I wonder what a speckled sussex roo over a barred hen would do (would that be a gold roo over a silver hen producing sex linking????). The one chick Flash is clearly a Barred Rock, and Bats and Flash came from similar eggs consistent with a Barred Rock egg. Hmmmm. Might mean Bats is a girl??? as sex linking follows females taking the roo traits and males taking the female traits in the crosses????? (Still haven't got all that in my head yet).

Anyway....just guesses. Hope they're pullets and good layers, and hybrids would be wonderful for that.
