Besides being Microchick, I'm N0BEX. I got my technician's license two years ago in March of 18. In July I got my General license and yesterday I passed my Element 4/Extra Amateur test.

Are there any other HAM operators on the forum besides me?

My Fcc license call sign. November zero bravo echo xray.

HAM is not cb. No funky 'handles' although some semi drivers are HAMS and have HF radios in their rigs with registration numbers seperate from their cb handles.

HAMS have to be licensed and pass some pretty mind bending exams in order to get that license. They are also strictly monitored and governed by the FCC. Big Brother is always listening to us.

Think emergency radio services, military and law enforcement. Remember the movie Independence Day where they were transmitting around the world using Morse Code because earth's communications satellites were down? HAMS can do that!

when cellphones fail and the grid falters, HAMS will still be up and operating. we have our own power sources, our own radios, our own antennas.

There is a motto I've seen: when all else fails amateur radio doesn't!

Bucket list:

(__) ARRL license

I'm finally gonna get a license. Next month the local FEMA/County Emergency Management Dept is hosting a class for all military & veteran & their families to get licensed...... It's fallen through the cracks on me to many decades.....

Our local club is doing a net this morning about weather spotting, It was one of the reasons that we became HAMS. Our area is a dead zone that depends on weather watchers for condition reports.

Last year we had a severe thunderstorm roll through that dropped hail on us. We got on the radio and reported our location and what was happening. Sure enough, less than 5 minutes later there was a tornado warning that went up for the area to the east of us.
