Oh wow I have odor coming from the incubator a very fowl yucky odor!!!

So tried recandling and threw out some of our home flock browns....they had blood rings very early death. All of the browns were not good ....threw out one more of the lavender eggs it had a blood ring.....odor is still there ugghhhhh......so I guess I will wait till tonite and candle the new eggs we put in on monday to see if by any miracle any of them are developing after the po fiasco. Really disappointed at this point but do still have a few developing

I had a fowl smell a few years back and i found it by taking each one out and smelling it. OH BOY can you tell which it is if you do that LOL Hopefully it doens't blow up on you! Be careful! Try to get it out asap.

ok I am going to candle the new ones we put in on monday tonite so if they have no veining I am throwing them out....yours and my home ones I had already candled and threw out no development and blood rings .....ugghhhh i have to find which one it is oh it is bad!!!

My eggs are due about when yours are too, so I'll tag along until hatch! I have 16 purebred araucanas in the 'bator, down from the 24 I started with.

Definitely try and find the stinker and quickly! A rotten egg explosion would be absolutely dreadful. The one time I had a smelly egg I sniffed each egg individually. But be careful! I never had one explode, but I hear they are like a ticking timebomb and the slightest agitation can set them off!

Ohhhhhh it was YUCKY to the max!!!!!!!!!!! I found it by sniff test and almost threw up it was sooo gross !!!!! It was one of the newer ones.....recandled lost one more of the lavenders....lost 2 more of the homes and only four of the new shipped ones show possible veining soooooo we wound up with not one single silkie or silkie mix having any veining!!! The kids are super sad but we are still hopefull and excited about the lavendars maybe just maybe

I have got to find silkies.......ugghhhhhh!!! That is all I am hearing probably all I am going to hear until I get a couple !!!!!

I still need to candle mine. Turning 150 by hand took all my time. I finally got my home made incubator done and working just in time because I now have 6 turners of which 5 1/2 are full and more eggs coming. I did candle my 3 Silkie eggs a few times and all 3 started developing then one formed a blood ring. Maybe after milking I can candle.

I candled my sixteen eggs last night and found all have live, bouncing embryos! So, with just over a week to go (should be due on the 10th), I am in the final stretch! Makes me wonder how many late quitters there will be, since the lethal tufted gene will be at work with my brood.

OH just found this thread and am so excited to join in! I put 9 bantam Araucauna eggs under my bantam Mille Fleur Cochin on June 22, so they are 10 days today. I have never done candling before but I believe I have at least 3 that have good veins. Not sure about the other 6. Here's a photo of Myrtle sitting on her adopted eggs.

Like demonstrated in that image (image taken from wikipedia where it has full rights to be shared). Tufting is a dominant gene that can be lethal to the chick, causing late egg death or even death shortly after hatching. But that usually only happens if the chick is homozygous for tufting. It is a breed trait for purebred araucanas in America and Canada.

So, a tufted x tufted (Tt) bred to another will result in

50% Tt (like the parents), 25% tt (cleanfaced, no tufts), and 25% TT (homozygous, 100% lethal).

There are actually quite a few lethal genetics in chickens, but this is one of the more commonly known ones. I won't go in depth, but I personally find it fascinating!
