Any Homeschoolers going all year round????????????

We are pretty close to unschoolers so since life never stops, neither does learning!

We do 1/2 days in summer, Even with swimming daily, it's too long a streach for them to do nothing but pester each other. So we begin 1/2 week in may and go thru to Aug, 2 weeks off then start the new year.

In our state(Indiana)it is the law to go for 180 days.But I want to go more of all-year.I thinkn I am going to start with catching him up on multiplication this week and reading then start next week with a little more states/capitals.He does read almost everyday,so I am proud of that.

This is our first year homeschooling without aid of a charter school and we'll be learning thru the summer. The kids still have 10-20 math/language arts lessons in their books to finish and we got waaaay off track with science and history. I figure we'll spend the summer reviewing basic math skills(addition/subtraction/etc..) and dive into the science and history lessons. We've got several hands on experiments and I have a summer job at a local camp so the kids and come with me and learn there too!!

That's one of the manymanymany reasons I have for homeschooling, that learning needn't take place ONLY at certain places, during certain hours, on certain days, wearing certain clothes, etc. That learning shouldn't be something dreary from which we anxiously await a break, and dread beginning again. Of course, there is a certain amount of paperwork that needs doing, that really does enable learning & is not just unnecessary busy-work. Here in sultry South Florida it makes more sense to stay indoors near the AC during the summer and try to complete a lot of paperwork. That way we have more liberty to take time during the traditional school year for other activities like gardening, holiday fun, our county fair, visiting nature centers during our splendid spring weather, etc.

In addition, we've gotten so spoiled by having the parks, playgrounds & libraries mostly to ourselves during the school year that we find them too crowded & loud during the summer when the institutional schools are on break.

My family goes "year-round" but we take breaks throughout the year as needed. For example, we go camping in March/April every year, so we take a week off for that. We also take a couple of weeks off for a vacation in September/October. We take off other times, too, if we have a lot going on that week, but for the most part, we do, indeed school year-round.
