Mallards are very good forager's, they retain a lot of instincts of their wild ancestors. He should be fine, I would be concerned about predators though.

Luckily the area is fenced off, Mallards retain wild instincts as you said so I’m guessing they would be more wary about predators than more domestic species. He can also fly really well as I saw him flying into the pond.

I asked about food just in case as he has spent his life domestically. However, he did forage by digging holes even though no one taught him so I guess you were right @MasterOfClucker about retaining natura instincts.
