Luckily the area is fenced off, Mallards retain wild instincts as you said so I’m guessing they would be more wary about predators than more domestic species. He can also fly really well as I saw him flying into the pond.Mallards are very good forager's, they retain a lot of instincts of their wild ancestors. He should be fine, I would be concerned about predators though.
