At 3 weeks old these little French Cuckoo Marans have become my hope for getting a cockerel since the 4, straight run black-split-to-lavender chicks all seem to be definitely pullets. They both have quite large white spots on their head and the blue-banded one has a certain boldness of manner.

But should they be significantly lighter if they're male?

They both look female to me, but I'd say that green band would have a slightly higher chance of being male, purely based on comb.

100% true! I'm sure that there are many BYC members that would swap places with you in a heartbeat! Are you set on having a male chick, or would you look at rescuing a mature rooster?

I would rather not have to deal with quarantine for an adult bird unless the circumstances were exactly right.

The Welp order that was going to contain my boys (at this point probably all those straight runs would be girls too), was pushed back to September.
