I thought when I bought Dotty from Tractor Supply, she was a Smokey Pearl. But she doesn't look like the rest of my Smokey Pearls with their standard red combs and orange legs. Of the chicks I bought that day, some Smokey Pearls, the ISA browns in the pic, and some Speckled Sussex, she is the largest hen by about a pound and the only one with black skin. If it wasn't for her large size, I would think maybe she was a Satin.

What a stunning girl!!!! 😍

This is what is listed that the Smokey Pearls should look like. Her sisters look more like this, only a much lighter gray. Dotty almost reminds me of an Ayam Cemani in the face. Maybe Dotty's daddy wasn't who they thought he was? Much like my chocolate lab/pitbull mix....daddy definitely wasn't a pitbull, pretty sure he was a daschund. :lau

She might be some new mixed breed they are testing the waters with. Sometimes Hoovers releases birds without "names" before they officially offer them.

After looking at someone else's Smokey Pearls on here, with the lighter feather coloring and darker, though not so inky black, combs and waddles, I'm suspecting her coloring may be a recessive gene from the breeds crossed to create the Smokey Pearls. Also suspecting that the Smokey Pearls coloring in general may not be true to breed further down the lines.

That's the epitome of hybrids.. they produce variations and don't breed true.

Just looking at it without all the discussion and coming from hatchery.. I would have said barnyard cross. Y'all have probably hit it on the head though! :thumbsup

All I know is she sure is pretty. Was kinda hoping for her to be a different breed than Smokey Pearl, so I could look for a few more like her.
