Any idea why chicks do this?

My first hatch ever and I have two adorable white chukars! Sometimes they peck at the air randomly, like they were trying to catch a fly or something, but there isn't one there. Do chickens do this too? Any idea why? Not that I'm complaining, it's pretty cute!

If you look closely, get at just the correct angle to the sunlight, you'll see that these chickens are pecking at dust motes floating in the air. It usually occurs early in the morning or late in the day as the sun is rising or getting ready to go down.

And yes, it's awfully cute.
