Any ideas about free ranging?

I say free range but in reality mine have about a fenced acre to range in. We do let them out if we are outside gardening and such. Our terrier mix Dory is pretty keen when other critters are around, I worry about her as well with the coyotes but they are around at night when the birds are all locked up and do not like the solar lights we have around the fenced acre. The auto door on the hen house is a must. I do live as Howard says, like the old days. All predators 4 legged and winged are dealt with before they get to eat. Have not lost a bird yet!

where i live too many predators to free range (would just be a free meal for all the predators out there.) we have the common, coyote, weasel and coons most of the time, and have the rare, black bear, bobcat, lynx, cougar, wild hog and what ever birds of prey are around (eagles, hawks etc..) we have our birds in a run all the time (attached to the coop) and lock in every night. also electrical fence helps the defense.
Say we don't have tiggers and we understand
