I'm trying to look for a pattern for a chicken saddle that will stay on no matter what the chicken does. I tried making a few for my 8 hens and they kept falling off. My hens are getting pecked badly not only on the back but at the stump of the tail too. Any ideas will help much!

Depends on how good the snaps are. I've had some where the snaps were worthless and some that stayed on well. Something I have not tried but considered. Using buckles, not snaps, and sewing a few stitches in the straps after they are buckled. I did that with my dog collars and it worked real well.

I used the saddle pattern in "Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens" and modified it for my little hen. I spent a few rounds trying it on her and making adjustments before it seemed to fit right. It's been on her for a month, no problems coming off. The snaps I used are the hammer in kind. I used upholstery weight silk. She healed up beautifully underneath it, and even a one new feather growing in!

I had seen their site and made one on my own using their shape. But now I just ordered 7 regular ones and 1 winter one for my flock. My rooster has gashed a second hen now and a couple others are showing signs of wear. It is easier and quicker for me just to order them.

HI,

I used a simple napkin. I don't know how to post a picture of it, but it worked really well. the trick was to double breast the front and collar it for comfort. she would shake it back on and pat it down w/ her wings.

send me an email and i will respond w/ all the pictures.
