Any ideas for an inexpensive privacy fence?

.....my sister has 3 dogs and just bought a beau house with neighbors surrounding her, I said you sure you want this?, there are lots of neighbors and they all have dogs....well she is going nuts cause all the dogs bark constantly , there is to much going on.....my next house will be in the Woods !

We have the same issues. LOL We are on the second "main" street out here, right on the corner, meaning, we face the saguaro national park - mountains = east..the south road to the left of us is the paved road off the main road thru town here, everyone elses' roads are dirt, so they use this road a lot. Out my front = east, I just see mountains and a great house..when I walk out back..I see oleanders on one side = north and that old woman is kinda nasty and mean so we ignore her, but the whole back is cyclone and I face the back neighbors who have a decent place, but a lot of cars and no privacy. We do have a giant 3 car workshop that blocks half their property..we need a nice RV to park along that one open spot and we wouldn't see them at all! LOLOL

Over that main road = to the south, another place...they have a lot of dogs..the other day I was wondering why they were barking so much..I looked outside and saw 10 teens walking their goats. LOL

I know we aren't being "stared" at..but I just love privacy..the secluded feel is great.

Im in a business section so this road is SO busy and when Im in the backyard you wouldn't know it......my neighbor can be an @ but we don't bother with each other at all, I try to be respectful and not let the dogs stay out for hours on end in case they bark, the one dog is very protective and Huge and when he barks you know it, so I bring him in. If money was no object I would put the wood fence all the way around but there is no way, my yard is so big I could never do it. So if I could do this one area it might make it alittle better, and I'd prob spend more time out there with my chickies

I commend you for keeping your dogs in control. I love dogs but it really irks me when people are so rude they let their dogs bark or run all the time. For the first 3 weeks we were here, we woke up to dogs on our porch every morning...evidently the owner's bro, who was living here, let his great dane run with two dogs down the street every morning..for goodness sakes people..we all have an acre or more..keep your dogs on your own property and teach them to shut up..drives me nuts.

I don't get it either..in fact, one of the dogs that was allowed to run..was found dead on the side road here 2 weeks ago..so they kept in the other for a week..just a week..yea, like that is going to prevent this one from being hit. People can be so stupid!

Don't know your climate but if you did something temporary like the shade cloth or reed material, in my neck of the woods can put out ornamental grasses that reach 5-7 ft even in 2-3 years with good soil and water. You actually can start these from seed yourself, get starts from friends, or buy very small plants on clearance sale in late summer. A row of tall ornamental grass makes a lovely screen and you only have to cut it back in early spring. In the winter it is beautiful, too. Again, not sure where you are.

I'd go with building a privacy fence (not the panels, a fence from scratch).....but only because I was doing the same today (working on attaching the last bit of privacy fencing while Bill worked on the coop and run).

8 feet high 4 x 4 posts (set six feet apart) were under $6 at our local Lowes (minus 10 percent using the coupons I purchase off ebay).

Stringers (2 x 4 boards at 12 feet) were $5.49.

5 1/2" x 6 foot fence boards were $1.17 each.

Setting the 4 x 4 posts in is the biggest pain (mainly because I was doing this by myself) but once they're set, putting the stringers on and adding the fence boards is pretty easy. The fence boards are very lightweight and easy to handle.

Perhaps you could consider doing this in sections (our privacy fence runs in front of a shorter wire/picket fence that was put up many years ago) as we've done.

We did the same thing to one of our rental houses; the lot ended in a bit of a "dumping ground" of branches and trees cut down by a previous owner, then dragged to the back of the lot. Rather than attempting to drag these huge limbs/trees away, we built a privacy fence that ran the entire width of the lot and connected to nothing else but provided a nice screen from this stuff. The lot was quite deep and so far, no tenants have even ventured a look on the other side of the fence.

Have you considered latticework? A little pricey, but very nice-looking. You could train a thick vine on it for absolute opaqueness.
