Any ideas on feeding an infant Florida Scarlet Kingsnake? SAD*UPDATE*

I always put just one cricket at a time in the cage with mine when he was a baby (for safety reasons) and he never failed to eat them. I am pretty sure mine was newly hatched when I found him, though. He absolutely thrived on the crickets and it took no time at all to graduate to split pinkies.

If you do choose to cut the pinkies, I always did mine while they were still frozen. Made far less mess, then I heated them up. It was still pretty gross though. He likes to scooot up the side of his cage while eating and would have mousie parts dripping down the glass. EEEWWWWW I do not miss that!!!

Mangled, Pinkies are baby mice.....the ones with no hair and eyes closed.

That ALWAYS grosses me out, lol. Im so glad my little guy that didnt like to eat whole pinks is now eating two! Good luck with this little King, snakes are awesome pets.

Maybe nightcrawlers or mealworms? My baby cornsnakes always ate pinkies, but they were a bit bigger than you little guy.
If you cut up frozen pinkies....NEVER heat/thaw them in the microwave! They can get VERY hot on the inside (those juicy internal thingys)and injure your snake.

I can't believe no one mentioned this, especially Jordan... Never use heat rocks with snakes, they can and will burn themselves... switch to an under the tank heater and you should be fine, get a thermometer also, you need to know the temps so you know your snake isn't sacrificing it's safety and comfort for a little heat. Cute snake btw!

(edited to add..) "Scarlet kingsnakes seem to prefer lizards, but most will eat small mice, fish, frogs or snakes.
They, like all the kingsnakes are constrictors. Young scarlet kings can be fed small lizards, small snakes or small fish until they are big enough for pinkie mice. They seem to like ground skinks best."

The easiest way I have found to heat mice is doing what we call "making mouse tea".

We drop the mouse in a zipppy bag and seal it, drop it in a cup of warm water,, and wait. I ALWAYS test the mouse by laying it across my wrist for a bit before I feed my snakes. A mouse that is still cold inside can fool you and can kill your snake. Oh the disgusting things I am willing to do for the animals I love.

Snakes are just such amazing animals. If I am feeling stressed, just letting one of them crawl through my hands totally relaxes me. They can be so loving, too. Oreo (my California King) loves to prop her head on my oldest son's glasses and just stare into his eyes. Pretty sweet stuff.
