Any ideas on this boy?

He's a few years old..hackles and wings have gotten a little darker as he aged. I've gotten babies out of him that looked like everything from a RIR to an Americauna. .but really the most curious to see if anyone has ideas on what type/breed/color hen to put him over for the best odds at getting a baby colored like him..I've hatched out a lot of his babies but none had his coloring. I've put him over EEs,RIR and just about every color of mixed layers..

He looks to me like a Blue Ameraucana rooster. He's gorgeous whatever he is!

Very pretty rooster you have there! He is an Easter Egger (pure Ameras must have beards, and he is not a recognized color). If you could cross him with another Easter Egger hen, (preferably one that is of similar color) than breed his daughters back to him, you have a pretty good chance of getting chicks that look like him (depending on the genetics involved.

Thank you I have several hens to choose from (hes not mine, but a neighbors)..she has 3 bearded hens with im and then a variety of other breeds as well..The 3 bearded are a buff color with black tips on their tails..I tried to upload a pic of some of the girls but couldn't get it to load..The hens I have of breeding age out of him are blue/grey and look like what I have seen posted as Ameracaunas(think I spelled that right??) I know I have pics of them, and their first eggs are in the bator now So fingers crossed this is the year I get look alike babies..Its no huge deal, but to me he looks like the 'country rooster' poster boy and I just want 1 (or 3) like him running around..lol..


The 2 blue looking ones are his daughters (out of the cream buff looking hens with black on their tails) The one closest to the camera lays a very blueish egg and the other an olive green one. Their first eggs are due May1st but Im guessing that there is just as much chance of RIR roo in the pic here of being daddy as there is the pretty boy that I want to be...we shall see I guess when they hatch..if not I will see about penning them together for a month or so ...

This is as good as I could get of the blue girls mamas...'pretty boy' is a super boy and even tho they're not mine, and they come up to my place 2x a day like clockwork to get fed and mealworms (and dig around in my yummy compost piles...lol)..he is still leery of me getting too close to his girls

He is basically a blue golden duckwing. Does his skin seem darkish? It sort of looks like he might have the black skin like silkies have but lighter.


If you want more like him, breed with hens that have a lot of "detail" on their backs and bodies. Lots of black stripes, pencilling etc. with necks that are totally, fully striped. Salmon color on their breasts.

Avoid solid coloreds, also avoid the hens with mostly solid colored bodies with color on just the tail and tiny bit on neck. You will never get his color by breeding with RIR for example.

If you know what a duckwing hen looks like, that is exactly what you want to breed with him. Either red or silver duckwing will work for him. I don't really see a 'right hen' for him..

Thank you!! We have a swap coming up the first Saturday in May and there is usually a variety of chicks and older hens so going to keep any eye out for any that would be suitable.. I am hatching right now, so may get something but I would be just as happy with a full bator of his only...lol.. He is not mine, so Im not real sure about the skin, but from what I am able to see, it is darker.. I think that is my problem for sure than, bc even btween what I have and what his owner has, none of the girls are even close to what you decribed..mostly solids, none with more than 25% of their body with any type of patterning ..

Glad to help. None of the hens being 'right' explains why you haven't got more like him for sure. Those hens have various genes that are dominant/semi dominant and like to clear the body of patterning or have genes that will not allow patterns to show on the body.

Look up pictures of red or silver duckwing hens any breed to get familiar with the pattern. There are many EE with it, it was just 'bad luck' the flock did not have them.. also light brown leghorns, welsumer hens can work.... btw I do agree the rooster is most likely EE or EE mixed with ??

OH the desirable chicks would be the ones with extremely strong chimpunk pattern. Bold, well defined and medium width stripes from the head all the way down to the tail. Check out pictures of duckwing chicks.
