So i have a Blue Slate tom turkey and I'm looking to get him some females, I'd like some Blue Slate females, but I have some questions about Blue Slate girls:

1) Are they wonderful egg layers?
2) Do they go broody?
3) Are they good mom's?
4) Are they friendly birds?
5) Are they good foragers?
Overall how are the birds?

Thank you in advance!

1. In their younger years, they are as good of egg layers as any of the other varieties.
2. All of my Blue Slate hens went broody.
3. This depends on the individual bird and the conditions. Allowing a hen to have her clutch in the general population can cause loss of poults because there are just too many things that can go wrong in the general population.
4. Depends on how you raise and interact with them. I avoid imprinting any of my turkeys. My turkeys will not approach a person. They act like turkeys and not like pets. None of my turkeys are human aggressive.
5. Mine are.

My Blue Slates did the best for me of any of the varieties that I have raised.

Remember that they will not breed true. Breeding a Blue Slate tom to a Blue Slate hen will produce approximately 50% Blue Slates, 25% Self Blues (aka Lavender) and 25% Blacks.
