I consider myself a Taoist .. which is a philosophy not a religion .. but everyone has thier own path ... I just find it "not" funny when most religions go to judging each other .. even when their books say "dont judge", .. but humor is dandy .. and something that gets lost in the Politically correct world alot of us live in these days

The "judge not" scripture is the most bandied about, misunderstood one of all, taken out of context and used to say, don't tell me I'm wrong. You cannot separate a few words from its context to make it say what you want it to say. The context is not being hypocritical in your judgements, to apply the standards to yourself as well as other people. To never make any judgement is a ridiculous notion. Of course, you must! Was the Twin Towers a wrong act? Yes. Now, that's a judgement. The Bible says to "judge righteous judgement", based on scripture. To make no judgement makes you fall victim to everything that comes through the door. So, let's not misuse this "judge not" thing. Here is something that explains what I'm saying:

Well, getting back to what LisaJean was asking about, if she wants to follow through and speak with them, she could just say she's not open to being converted. But that she would like to know how they view Jesus (God's son or otherwise, etc), or something specific like that. Then when the topic is done, she's free to say that that's all the time she has for them that day, thank you for coming.

Speckledhen(Cyn).............that was very well put! Everyone judges things, events and people in one way or another to some extent. I get so upset when you hear this preached and then turn right around and hear in some form, someone judging someone else. I do it, I try not to make any harsch judgements about anyone. I was taugt by my parents that no matter what situation someone is in, you cannot judge them because of it. You do not know what caused their situation and as far as you know they are doing the best they can do. As a christian, I live my life as close to what god would want as possible. I make mistakes, I catch myself sometimes judging people, and I find myself not loving everyone.....I do the best I can do and have came along way in a short time. Just 4 years ago, I was spending $100 to $150 on Fri. & Sat. nights at the bar! Now I have a 6 pack in the fridge that I mostly use for making beer batter for cooking! I was divorced and I lived it up, blowing $48,000 in less than 2 years. I had custody of my daughter and met my new wife and really turned everything around. I have been in church now for 2 years and if anyone doubts the power of God, then I can attest to it! I just recently lost my job and was doubting God(why he would he let me lose my job at this time of year?) For a day or so I was in the dumps. Then I went and started handing out resumes. Before I got back home, people were calling me wanting to set up an interview! I actually had to put some off for a day or 2 because I could fit them in! In the first day, I had 3 job offers and while I was deciding which job to take, another called. This one offerd me $240 more a week than what I was making when I was let go from my original job! And any overtime I want! So, God does work in mysterious ways and when I was down for the 1st time in 2 years, I am back up again!.....................................Sorry if this got to be long but, I got a little carried away...

Wow..........it is very interesting to hear of some of the many rumors and myths about being Mormon! Some have a very small grain of truth to them, but are badly distorted, others are sad at how totally incorrect they are.

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, sometimes called "Mormon". www.mormon.org

I don't even know where to start to clear up some of these statements, but the one that made me laugh out loud was the one about ripping out the carpet in the temple after the "open house" where members of the public are invited in, to get rid of the "cooties". In reality, it is ripped out to put new carpet down because thousands of people had walked on it, and even if it was only a few months old, it certainly wasn't clean anymore! They frequently do this in new housing developments with the Model Houses before the new owners move in, as everyone has walked through them and they are matted down and dirty.

As most have said, members of the LDS (mormon) church tend to be generous, kind, family-oriented, and conservative in moral beliefs (I am not speaking political beliefs, those are all over the board-- I am a Democrat!). If you have some Missionaries want to speak to you and you are not interested, JUST SAY SO! There is no way that you could join any church (mine included) without having an open heart and an acceptance of it--- this life is all about choice. I am sure that they would appreciate it if you said it kindly. If you ever change your mind, you can track some missionaries down again by finding the church in your phone book or by going to the www.mormon.org website and requesting more info.

We believe, as most Christians do, that when you have the knowledge of the Savior it is important to share that with others, that is why missionary work is done.

Take care,

LisaJean,
I found this site interesting reading: http://www.josephlied.com/

And
yes, stick with the core stuff. Bunny trails will get you no where. I had a friend in the last town I lived in that had LDS ladies visit her and they wouldn't give up. They got to be quite a problem.

LDS core beliefs do include "celestial marriage" marriage for life and all eternity, the baptism of the dead, and the sealing of the dead. They believe that after the second coming of Christ, he came to the new world with a new doctrine for those living there, they believe in the revelation of Joseph Smith by the angel Maroni in which golden tablets were revealed to Joseph Smith and translated. Many of the core beliefs differ greatly from convential Christianity.

The missions are about converting non-believers. Mormons are very community oriented, family oriented and involved in many volunteer activities. They are very supportive of people within their community, and of others.

Discussing religions with others of different beliefs can be interesting, informative and fun. Listening to someone trying to convert you can be an ordeal, especially if they won't honor your views.

I've had Jehovah's Witnesses knock on my door on Easter. Never have I seen or heard a Mormon show such a lack of respect for another's beliefs.

LisaJean,
I'm not a Mormon myself, but one of my friends was a missionary. I think it's ok that you invited them back even though you have no plans to convert. The missionaries job is very difficult and a lot of people are very unkind. Any kindness you show them, even if it's not slamming the door in their face tells me something about you as a person.
But make no mistake, their aim in their mission is to gain converts, as is the aim of any missionary from any religion. If you keep that in mind when they come over it should be ok. If it were me I'd spend a little time doing some online research to find out what you might expect from them. If they ask if they can come again it's ok to say no.
