Any new laws take effect tomorrow in your state?

I think this will help. I feel that parents can teach, teach and teach their kids how to "protect" themselves but there are some monsters out there that will still commit such a horrible crime by taking these innocent children no matter how much they have been taught.

Of course...its what they do. Its what goes through their brain over and over again...
How to groom these kids and get to them..

So yes..you can teach your kids...but in reality..it doesn't always work..

So true.

And to take it even further. We as adults are taught and know what to do to "protect" ourselves and we as adults still get kidnapped and violated by these same predators. So, if an adult is not safe, then surely a child is not.:/

I didn't know that employers do that? That is an invasion of privacy. That's like giving them your bank account number. :smack

Well, I read that that is supposed to be a provision of Obamacare...that you are going to have to give the government all of your bank account numbers. I guess we will find out now that it's too late.

I guess the will be asking for keys to our houses and vehicles next. :smack

What is wrong with putting sex offenders in jail? Turning them loose in society and making them promise to be good to just prey on children is a breakdown in our justice system.
And just how do you propose to do this? Really. For every sex offender that is locked up, there are probably 10 that are loose. And how do you define a sex offender? There are many people that are registered as sex offenders that in reality are no such thing. And then there are others, like Uncle Harry, that nobody wants to report even though he has molested every kid in the family that he could get his hands on. Why? Because either nobody believes the kid and/or they are so worried about what the neighbors would think. Teaching th kid about boundaries, in a language he can understand, doesn't work 100%, but it's the best you've got.

I thought I heard just the opposite...that it was now LEGAL for employers to be able to ask for that.
Nope. Until now, it has been legal for emplyers to ask for that information. No laws on the books about it as all. Now, apparently, there are.

I don't know what Obamacare has to do with it. You have to file a tax identification number with the bank when you open an account. Nothing new here.

Sorry, my point was really the whole issue of registering SO's They put most of them in jail for a few years and then make them register for life usually. If your sentence is a lifelong sentence then they should keep them in jail not put them out where they are a threat to the public. I think that once you pay your debt to society that the punishment should be done. Registering sex offenders is not a deterrant to repeating offenders. Sex offenders can register as a transient under a bridge and therefore there is no real addresss of place to check on them. Trust me I am not defending them.

This
Yeah, gosh, not trying to derail the thread but just.. food for thought.  I worked with a really nice guy named Jesse.  He had the same girlfriend from when he was 14 and she was 13.  A couple weeks after his 18th birthday he got busted cause they put spy software on the computer and caught they had relations before she turned 18.  He was a responsible kid, not late and didn't mess around.  He is now labeled a sex offender.  A life time title.  But he was a nice kid, the two times he showed up to a work party he drank soda and turned down alcohol.  I just can't believe a guy like him has to warn all his neighbors every time he moves.  The girl eventually turned 18, had the order dropped and they are now married.  Anyways I'm going off on a tangent.  Sometimes the law is too black and white for common sense.

This happened to a friend of mine that I went to high school with. About 12 years ago.
He is married to the girl he was dating when he got the charges. They have children.
But he's still a sex offender

I agree that the law is too black and white sometimes.
But these cases are so much more rare than the just terrible offender cases.

I don't know anyone this has happened to personally but my school tried to scare us into not sending nude photos by showing us a video of someone who became a sex offender for receiving some nude photos of his girlfriend and showing them to his friends.

Truth Matthew...your school is not trying to scare you with lies, but with the truth. The child porn laws are such that possessing the images, even if they were sent to you by the girl in question, is against the law. Forwarding an e-mail like that can even get you into worse trouble....

Not only that, but if you take nude photos of yourself under 18 and a few years later someone finds that you have them that technically is possession of child pornography and you can get charged for possession of nude photos of yourself!
