Hello there and welcome to BYC!
Here here....down in the south central mountains!! Lots of New Mexicans here on BYC. You might stop by the New Mexico thread to connect with some others....

You will definitely want to stop by our Learning Center. All kinds of articles on getting started, building the coop or tractor, raising the chicks, picking the breeds and keeping your adult flock happy healthy and safe from predators...

Here is the link to our tractor pages and maybe you can find a few hints on building yours here....

We do have a breeds section however I like this page on the different breed descriptions that has more specific information...

Many breeds do well in our climate...Buff Orpingtons, Black Australorps, Barred Rocks, Easter Eggers, etc...I keep Black Australorps and Plymouth Barred Rocks. Both very friendly breeds, hardy healthwise, they can withstand both heat and cold if given proper shelter and are excellent layers, even later in life. They make great lap sitters too!! LOL
Your local feed store probably carries chicks in the spring time and if they do, they will also carry chick starter and layer feed. Stop by this link to our Chicken Treats Chart as to what other goodies chickens enjoy....

Good luck on this new journey!! If you have any further questions, feel free to ask. Stay warm up there, hopefully this warm weather holds out!!
Welcome to our flock!!
