We just processed five young roosters today. We hatched these fellows ourselves and I thought my daughters would be upset, but they took it right in stride. It's not the first rooster we've had to had to send to freezer camp, but only have done that once before. The girls loved looking at the entrails and organs that they are learning about in school and I'm so glad that a side benefit, in addition to all the nutritional advantages that others have mentioned, is that my children will not grow up to be squeamishly disconnected from real food. They will be able to travel abroad and courageously try all sorts of food. As those who have traveled overseas will know, Americans are the most squeamish about meat that looks like dead animals. It really is fairly unique to the U.S., which is amazing, given our agrarian roots. Our motto in our household is that if we can't pronounce it, we probably shouldn't eat it.
