I am trying to build a sustainable flock, but would like to let my oldest and best hen live out the full number of her days. However, this spring she started having bouts of what I think is vent gleet. Two other chickens came down with it shortly after her. I treated all three of them with Epsom salts soaks and they all appeared to be cured. But Hazel keeps having recurrences. I would get her fixed up and she'd be OK for a while, then she'd have a messy butt again. Recently she seems to be leaking clear fluid with some white mixed in from her vent. I don't think it's good for the flock as a whole for her to be running around with a wet, stinking butt, so I decided to treat the yeast infection aggressively for a week, and if I can't get her cleared up for good, I would process her.
I started out with an Epsom salt soak, followed by 2 Epsom salt drenches. Concurrent with that she got 2 days of Preparation H and her vent area was liberally slathered with Nystatin. Her vent was rinsed off daily and sun dried. I am feeding her fermented Flock Raiser. She was spilling her water, so I just made her mash soupier. She's in quarantine in a hospital crate in the shed so she can rest. She's eating well, not dehydrated, and even laid an egg Tuesday. After her bath today she flipped off my lap and went foraging. I let her go as I can scoop her off the roost tonight.
She does seem to be better. The prolapse is gone and her vent isn't red, though there is still a bit of a red area from her pubic bones to her breast bone. But she is still leaking clear fluid from her vent . Can anyone tell me what this is and what to do about it? Would Monistat suppositories help?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
