Of the 16 Australorps I got, I kept 8 and 8 went to my son's family next door. They just got their first egg. That has to mean mine are ready. Or not.

I just seems wrong that the roos beat up on the girls. Sure doesn't make me want to have one.Knobby,
Oh the unfairness of it all! Those silly BA's! I have two, and one of them is my last holdout. Today I saw her finally submitting to letting Duke climb aboard, she must be getting closer. I just love them truly, such regal ladies. Duke is beating the heck out of the other one. I think she is his favorite, and she is bald behind her comb, and she is starting to lose some back feathers. He is just making it easier for me to get rid of him!

I have had very similar eggs before. Someone on another thread likened thier egg dying to a printer, sometimes the ink just malfunctions. I have also had little chips on mine. They actually look like the little pieces of egg shells that I feed back to them, that seem to get covered up with the tint of the egg. Like extra calcium on them.. wonder if indeed that is what it is.I got a really neat looking egg today from one of my girls. I showed my DH and he says that's just poop on it. um no its not. so I washed it just to show him it was not poop. Of course I took a few pictures of it.

Well, let's get out the olI'm joining in! I have been keeping up with this thread for about a month now. Had an urgent question, so I became a member. Now that I am a member, here I am! We have 6 Barred Rock hens. We ordered them as pullets(15 - 20 wks. old) from a hatchery 9 weeks ago. So they should be at least 24 weeks old. 2 girls have waddles and tall combs. No squatting at all. This is our first time raising chickens and we are in love with them. They were a Christmas present for our son. Best gift he has ever asked for!
I miss Crafty Duck. I think their chickens are the same age as mine. Wonder if they have gotten eggs??
Also, thanks for the Wild Blackberry cake recipe. Looks delicious and my husband loves Black Berry Cobbler and can not wait for me to make this cake!
I think my girl's ink malfunctions. They have laid others similar to this before too. I am thinking its the same hen. I just can't remember who lays what egg anymore it's been so long since they were all laying well. I do have oyster shell in there for them but its free choice.I have had very similar eggs before. Very neat pictures there! Thanks for posting them!

Oh your son sounds like a beautiful angel. How lovely he has such an appreciation of nature and animals all ready. Blessings to him and your family. He will always remember his very first flock.Thank you, Melabella.
My son is 6. He loves all animals and gardening. Picking veggies and flowers and bringing them home is his way of showing his family he loves us. Now, to be able to bring home the eggs. He also enjoys picking greens for the chickens and feeding them too! He is not in 4-H. He gets a lot of hands on activities here at home.
Your barred rocks are so pretty! My girls look like Kate. We have not named them yet because we have not been able to tell them apart. I have tried y'alls advice and looked at their beaks and feet. I will get you recent pics ASAP!
This pic is from Dec 20, 2012. The day I got them!
