That's so neat, I would love to experience that once . Are the eggs all hers? Just curious how you work that. Do you collect the eggs and put her on them or does she lay them and just sit on the nest. ? Do they sit all the time? Is the nest outside or in the coop. Sorry, lots of questions but I'm so curious. So if the eggs are good we should be getting babies today!!! So excited and I want to look closer but Hermia is NOT having any of it. Puffs and growls if you get to close to her and the eggs. Anyone know if she will just finally abandon the eggs if they aren't going to hatch? Or will I have to let her have a go of it and then "steal" them if they don't hatch by Monday or so?
All the eggs are hers-the other girls started laying after she went all broody. I had collected the eggs in the week before(5 of them) and I don't refrigerate my fresh eggs so they stayed viable according to what I read. So once I saw that she was definitely broody I gave them back to her and within a couple minutes they were all arranged under her, she laid once more that day and has been on them since then. She is in an egg crate which was everyones favorite nest box but the other girls were annoying her and pooping on her at night(gross) so I moved the whole thing into the girls old brooder box(a huge plastic tote) and that entire thing is in the chicken tractor. So she is by herself. What is funny is that up until 2 or 3 days ago she would come out of the shed or brooder, screaming her lungs out, spend about 10-15 minutes eating everything in sight and drinking a bunch. Now nothing-she is apparently in lockdown just like an incubator. Hopefully we see some little fluffy butts soon. The weirdest thing about this whole experience is that Slo-fro, the rooster hasn't crowed since she went broody. I'll post pictures if we get any babies,That's so neat, I would love to experience that once . Are the eggs all hers? Just curious how you work that. Good luck.
Well HECK YES! Love new byc'ers and also soooo envious of the broody mamas! what breed are the hens? please take pictures of those cute little babies... only one more week for you to wait, and GOOD LUCK!Hello all.. I was wondering if I could join in? I have 2 hens sitting on 12 eggs..( only one laid them but for some reason they both are setting on them). They are due to hatch around the 11th of this month and I am very excited... 1.) Because these are the first that we have hatched( we had the hens given to us after they where grown and quite abit older, and the roosters we purshased as chicks) and 2.) We bred her with our Beautiful Easter Egger. We recently had to do a little repair to our cage, something MUST of been getting the eggs because she/ they started out with 15 eggs and now are down to 12
( and we never found any remnants of the eggs, so fingers crossed we have fixed however whatever it was from getting in.![]()

Nice to see you back xshoshin! Missed ya!Wow...I've been offline for a while and I come back to such sad news! KD and Melabella...I am so sorry! We fur/feather moms are so quick to feel that we've failed when sometimes stuff just happens too quickly. We do our best for our "kids"...that's all they ask. Sad sad sad....it so hard to lose a companion.
I've been so curious about fermented feed but I can't quite figure out WHAT to ferment? Their regular layer pellets? Scratch? Special seed mixes??? Anyone really familiar with this process? If you could just point me to VERY DETAILED instructions because, as you can tell, I know absolutely nothing about this process.
Also, reading about the various mishaps, diseases, and owies that can afflict the hens, can someone recommend the basic first aid supplies I should have on hand for my chickens? Again, assume I know nothing (because you will be right!).
JK....AWESOME coop! I am jealous....
