Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

Well, after the horrific storms we had yesterday, downpours--AGAIN, today is finally a beautiful day, no humidity and 70's. We'll take it. I think the girls are tired of rain and mud too. Funny, yesterday before the storms came, all 3 were trying to lay at the same time. 2 of them were fighting over one box, even though the one next to it was empty-- the one started pecking at the others face. When i looked in, i saw one had laid an egg and they were fighting over the egg???? weird-- my RIR was pacing frantically outside, again, the other nest was empty-- I grabbed the egg out of the box to stop the bikckering, one got out, the RIR got in and knocked my barred rock out of it who started pacing as if to say "i've got to lay NOW", OMG what a rukus. !! I don't know if they sensed that weather or what. We lost power for about 7 hours, yuk--- but we made it without much damage although my beans and corn pretty much destroyed due to the wind and all the water they've been in for the last 2 weeks. - Crazy stuff. The coop weathered the storm-- hoping to get more accomplished this weekend since we're supposed to be dry up until end of next week.

I've got 4 ladies and I have no idea how old they really are. None are laying yet. I'm going to try to upload some photos to see if any of you can help me out with am estimate...Been watching the waddle color...no other activity like squatting. Both of my RIR seem to be about the same age..The dark Brahma and the golden laced Wyndotte see to be younger, I sure would like some help. I have them on layer crumbles and provide oyster shell and grit but they don't seem interested in that yet. Have them in a 4 x 10 coop and am working on a tractor for daytime use. Too many critters around here to allow free range, sorry to say

They look great jtbass2756. I think your RIRs will start before your other two. Though I think you still have a little bit of a wait... I love Brahmas... I so want one in my next group of chickens.
It is raining here in Southern California... I so missed the rain. We have not had any for months. I wish we could have stolen a few of your storms kdwag. You could use less and we need way more;) It is not much rain... but i love it.

So I need some chicken expert advice! I clipped both my EE's wings a couple of weeks ago because one of them made an escape attempt OVER my backyard fence. I followed all of the instructions I could find on here and clipped the flight feathers of one wing only on each of them. I'm not sure how much height this is supposed to take off their flight attempts, but this afternoon one of them managed to jump/fly out of her pen and on top of the run of the coop, to a spot which is about 4 feet tall. Is it possible I didn't clip far enough up towards her wing, or is she just super determined?

Edited to say, yes I realise this post is off-the-topic

I figured it's about time to jump on this thread! My girls aren't ready yet, but they are getting close. My Leghorns and EE's are 16 weeks and my BO's are 14 weeks (they still have a ways to go). But I keep reading that Leghorns start laying at 16-18 weeks! I was planning on them laying around 20 weeks, so I thought I still had a month left. Now I will just sit impatiently and wait for my first egg!

This is Batman. The 2nd pic is my Sweet Penny And then a pic of her gift to me yesterday! I am 1 proud/happy momma! I'm not real sure of her breed? If anyone knows please share. Next is Red. He's such a gentle sweet boy. And then there's Girtie, my little nervous nelly, which I do not know the breed? Again, if anyone knows please let me know. 7 more to go, I'll show those in another post, following this one.

Does anyone have a photo of what your leghorns looked like the week they started to lay? I am interested in seeing the comb and wattle changes as compared to where my nearly 16 weekers are.
