Nice to hear from those starting to get eggs at last, it is all so exciting.

Three of my four girls have now started laying, though the Barnevelder laid one a week ago and hasn't repeated it since. I am hoping she hasn't decided never to do THAT again! The RIR and Australorp both lay an egg a day. I am very pleased with their smarts. They choose different nesting boxes and if it's the afternoon and they are free ranging, they both return to their personal favourite nesting box to lay their egg. Yay!! I worried they would just find a quiet corner somewhere.

Funny how the antyicipation keeps up though. My last one, the Silver Campine is still yet to lay. They are all six months old now. I have noticed that they are calmer once they start to lay. The SC continues to be very flighty and also noisy in the mornings because she wants out, whilst the others just nestle down for a snooze in the sun in the run.

Just as I write this, Barnie the Barnvelder is making loud brr-cack!! noises which I think might be her egg song. Perhaps I've embaressed her into laying again by telling you all about her!!!!

Good luck on the waiting, everyone!!!

So wonderufl SC,

I am so happy to hear your description, I love waiting with you all, and this helps me stay encouraged. It is so funny how dejected you an feel,, are they every going to give me an egg?/

Going to look up what a Silver Campine looks like, not familar with that breed. Forgive me as I have forgotten, who gave you your first egg? I have both BA's and RIR, so it will be interesting to see what happens with them.

Keep the info coming... LOVE IT!

It was Ladybird, the RIR who laid first, but Beetle the Australorp was only a couple of days behind her. Then a week later, Barnie the Barnevelder.

There are some nice photos of Silver Campines in the Breed Profile. This is Sylvia at 23 weeks, so not yet mature. She is mid-weight and a slimmer line chook than the other 3 who are good stocky, beefy girls.

Since these were taken their combs and wattle have grown and got redder. Looking like big girls now!!! Love them to bits

Beautiful birds!

Is your RIR hatchery stock, or is she from heritage lines.? I like the look of her.. very pretty

I got all four of them at a hatchery just north of here (Sydney, Australia). The guy there breeds about 20 breeds of chickens as well as guinea fowl and peacocks. He described her as from show quality parents, but she's not perfect by the strict show standards here. I think the Australian and US standards are a bit different in places. Anyway, she is a nice dark red, I think and a very handsome chicken. As well as being a very calm, bold, unaggressive Top Chook. I am lucky indeed!

She is a Silver Campine (pronounced CamPEEN) a breed from Belgium originally. She loves to fly and to free range and is vocal about not being let out early enough. Sound familiar? She will lay a white egg.
