Yay!CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!! This is so thrilling! Now the countdown until all are laying! LOL!
Diana,I have 16 golden comets, 11 have been laying for months now. I have 5 that just turned 18 weeks old dec 31. I think one of them might have started to lay but not sure yet. I have not had a double yolk egg for awhile and I got one this morning. Winter has caused production to go up and down. I got 11 eggs this morning and 10 yesterday. My 11 golden girls started laying at 14 weeks. They are starting to change in they way they get along with the flock. It has been a hard long road to get them to live together but I think they finally get it. I don't think they have gone through the pecking order yet. But a couple of them have started to mix with my older girls and are not as scared. They are not squatting yet. Wish I could put a web cam on them to see who is laying and who isn't.
Nicki,Just went over last years notes and egg chart. http://www.hencam.com/static/uploads/2012/01/taylor_egg_record.pdf
I bought 8 bags of feed and one bag of scratch last year. Wish I would have kept track of the cost of the feed each time I bought it. Doing that this year. My girls laid 712 eggs last year that I was able to keep track of. My neighbors gathered eggs for 8 days in August for us back when my girls were laying 4 and 5 eggs a day. so I know their egg count was actually more like 735. Egg counts per month went Jan-69, Feb-68, March-58, April-52, May-61, June-103, July-89, Aug-74, Sept-54, Oct-38, Nov-28, Dec-18. My 5 SS stopped laying the beginning on Oct and that's when my 2 Wellies started laying. My EE has yet to start.Today I got an egg from Daphne one of my Wellies that was going through a mini molt. She is still molting but I know its her egg because it has spots and Phoebe's eggs dont have spots.![]()
Egg on the left is(Phoebe's) 1.8oz and the one on the right is(Daphne's) 1.7oz
UACV (unpasturized apple cider vinegar) is good for reducing slime buildup, but more importantly add balance to the digestive track and is also a wonderful home remedy for controlling and warding off parasites. I have not had a single sloppy poo since starting it, only large green solid ones with white caps on them. I have yet to begin with fermenting feed with it, but it is supposed to be wonderful for healthy chicks, and also people who use it say that they go through far less feed. Also is supposed to produce far larger yokes in eggs, and some even claim it returns far more female chicks than males when fed excusivly on it. I just haven't wanted to tackle it in the winter, and was going to wait until spring.I have heard of the apple cider vinegar in their water, but heard it was only to help reduce the "slime" that builds up in water. It wasn't until recently that I heard it has health benefits for animals, does it have to have the mother in it or can it be the regular stuff? I also just recently heard of fermenting their feed, I really should learn more about doing these things. I want healthy girls more than eggs, I love watching the girls do the silly things they do.
I edited my post and added the correct link. It's a printable chart from back in 1936 I just printed it off and write in the egg count for the day. I also weigh my eggs and write the weight and date on every egg. That way if I forget to add to the chart for a few days I can look back on the eggs themselves and see.Nicki,
thank you for posting your egg stats from last year, I clicked the link and it didn't seem to come up on the hencam.com site. Does she have some sort of way you can keep your records on there? I love that website as well, and learned a lot from reading her blog. Her hencam is very fun to watch as well. My egg count is only up to 4, I think only one, maybe two girls are laying. I have no way of knowing as I have spent little time outside since the eggs started on NY's eve. It turned very cold this week, and I basicaly have been a wimp about hanging out in it!
How old is your EE? I would love to get some of those to add to my flock. Does SS stand for Speckled Sussex?
I hope I can get numbers like that, I can't imagine. I have 9 girls, so I imagine when they all are up and laying, I can have quite a few days a week where maybe I could get 7 or 8 a day. I wonder if I would ever get all 9 to lay in a day,, that would be something...
