Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

So I went out to check for eggs this morning, and my rooster was guarding the nesting box. He was standing on the perch next to the box, and every time I tried to get close, he flaps his wings and squawks loudly. So I finally had to kick him outside. Then I check the box, and it's empty

But right after I leave, Kenny Rogers escorts one of the older girls into the nesting box. So I guess he's my nesting box guard? So funny. That was more than an hour ago, but right now I can see him through the window, still sitting on that perch. All the girls are playing in the run. What a weirdo.

Oh my goodness,

So funny this happened to you. Today I went to check the nest boxes to see if anyone else laid an egg I got the usual one at 10:30 but noticed other girls going up and down the plank to the coop. Lots of action. At one point everyone was in there, and when I opened the nest box door, (there are six of them) Kate one of my Barred Rock girls came in, and stuck her head out and was talking to me. She was cooing away, and I took the opportunity to pet her, as my girls really are not very into me touching them. I was thinking she maybe be squatting for me, and I was thinking how soft she was when all of a sudden... Duke my roo charged me with his claws ready and scratched my hand and gave my arm a big peck. Thank goodness I had my big winter parka on,, but it scared the holy molasses out of me! Well, I went around to the door, and when he came out,, I gave him a big hit off the plank. I have noticed lately when I walk near one of the girls,, he stands tall and does his big flapping. I remember reading back in the Gnarly BUnch thread that Bee suggested starting to carry a rooster stick to be ready to time your friendly "reminders" who is head roo... ME. So far he has been quite polite, and moves out of my way when I approach. Thinking of it later, I realized that maybe he viewed me petting her back as possibly mating behaviour, or just that I was too darn close. Nonetheless, when I discovered at 4 weeks he was a mistake roo in my hatchery order, I decided to focus on some of the postives of having a roo, and so far, it's been a peaceful thing. I do have a lot of small nieces and nephews and neighbors that come to visit us here, and are especially fond of the chickens and can't risk any aggressiveness from him. I was talking to him when I just went out to check the boxes before they head to bed, and told him he better smarten up or he is OUTTTA HERE!

Bad BOY!

I've had several mean roos. Some I've been able to tame. I usually carry them around upside down for 15 minutes or so. After a few times of doing this, they learn you're the dominant roo. When that doesn't work, they occasionally end up in the stew pot. That's usually a last measure for me, and only if I'm worried about him attacking my daughter...which has happened. One rooster in particular was an egg she had hatched. She named him Buttercup...yeah...Buttercup. They were best buds until he hit puberty. He was the meanest rooster ever. I tried everything to get him to stop attacking her, but nothing worked. RIP Buttercup.

Beautiful eggs! They look just about the same size as mine are. I would love to invest in a digital scale, and see what they are. I think they are medium, DH thinks they are small. I am hoping they get bigger as the laying goes on. My Black Australorps are getting very big,,, they better give me large eggs. What breeds do you have again Redangler? How many are in your flock?
I have gotten an egg every day since New Years Eve. I finally saw today who laid it. It was my red sex link Matilda. Funny, she doesn't even have the most pronounced comb and waddles, but I guess she was just ready. I definetaly have girls practicing today. They would head up the ramp, sit in the boxes,, make a bit of noise, then get up and leave. I hope by next week I will have at least two a day..

I have four ISA browns, four RIR and two EE hens. Pepper my rooster is a light sussex. I have to work on the door to the egg boxes so hopefully i will find my layer. I think it is probably one of the ISA browns but i also have one RIR who is the most developed. I am also going to weigh them tomorrow.

Mellabella, I bought a small digital scale at Walmart. There were some as low priced as $15 - $25...

I will take a pic later.... I got my 12th egg today. Yahhh... 1 dozen eggs
