SO JEALOUS OF THAT BLUE EGG!! Congrats on the beautiful eggs!!
Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

We got our first egg today!!! Hooray!! 
I wasn't even expecting anything, but my daughter wanted to check when we let the chickens out this afternoon. And there was a big beautiful brown egg in the nest box right next to the bright blue plastic easter egg. We were so excited. My daughter carried it around for quite a while and she kept going back to the frigde to check on it all evening. (My daughter's four, by the way.)
The egg was cold, so it must have been laid earlier in the day. We will check first thing tomorrow morning.
It had to be either the rhode island red or the silver laced wyandotte. Maybe we will be able to figure out who it is tomorrow.
On another note, it's looking like we might have to get rid of our rooster. My daughter was trying to pet the chickens today. They are pretty good at staying just out of reach. I noticed the he was trying to get between her and the hens, then he fluffed up and flapped at her. I chased him back and kept him moving for a minute or two until he backed down and walked away from me. Then, about five or so minutes later, he snuck up behind my daughter and flew at her and tried to scratch her. She was mostly just frightened by it, not actually hurt, but I can't have an agressive rooster around. I chased him around the coop for a few more minutes to try to show him that he'd better back off, but I don't know if that's going to work. If he tries anything tomorrow then he's going to have to find a new home, either with another flock or in the stew pot.
Oh, and if I can figure out how to post a picture, I'll have a pic of the first egg here soon.

CONGRATS Banana!!!! That's a beautiful egg and an even better egg holder!
I hope your rooster gets better because it is frustrating not being able to trust them. I have noticed that ours is on edge first thing in the morning when he comes out of the coop and is also sensative to clothing color that my kids wear. As metioned in an earlier post I had a few incidents with our rooster and our childen, I ran him all around our run for about ten minutes. Over the next couple days with my guidance I had my kids do the same thing and he has since calmed down and now the kids can be around him and he no longer bothers them( I do tell them to never trust him). I also had a stern discussion about chicken soup with him complete with carrots and celery in hand. I hope it all works out for you.

Congrats on that egg Banana! My daughter is 8, and she's also anxiously awaiting some new eggs. When we have a lot of layers, my kids actually argue over who gets to gather eggs, which is funny to me, because that was my least favorite chore as a kid. Now I love gathering eggs.
I have talked earlier in this thread about mean roosters and my daughter. I've kind of developed a better way of taming them over the last year. I did hatch one mean fella last spring, but a raccoon took him in the fall. Previous to that, quite a few wound up in the soup pot.

congratulations to all the egg holders! and excelsior! to those of us also still waiting...
i misspoke twice in my last post, in part because i was crazy/sleepy and in part because my hunch was wrong wrong wrong... i had meant to say i thought paula ryan had laid her first egg, but i think it's ALL mika .... there has been an egg a day for over a bakers dozen now, i think -i'd have to consult my calendar, but (what's worse is, i am basically counting my egg before it's hatched at this point...what is wrong with me!?)
wishing all a sing song sunday! (our birds are singing some springtime songs, how about yours?)

I am wondering if my egg a day in the beggining was actually two different pullets laying. I have had one large very dark brown egg every day for 14 days(no matter how many eggs I get, the most has been 4 in one day). I find it hard to believe that that one pullet, being a new layer, has been the one to give me that dark egg every day. I have tried to narrow down who it is. I am pretty sure it's either one of myRIR's or the production reds. I get darker brown eggs as well, but none as dark as the very first. It's almost in the BC Maran chart dark! Can newlayers actually lay every day for two weeks staight? I think not...

melabella, sigh.... i wish i knew!
i also forgot to mention that when i compared the egg to the others... it was actually smaller NOT larger (did my hand shrink!?lol), so i don't know what was going on with me that a.m., but i swear before i get an egg scale, i am going to end up investing in a video camera out of curiosity! this is my first chicken experience. and in light of my previous posts, i am being less than scientific it here! but, none of the other ladies seem 'different' like she does... or as red... or as i guess docile is maybe the word i am looking for....
but hey, maybe she just has an award winning personality! (she does)
i can't wait to get more than one egg a day!! even though i am already reprimanding myself for being so greedy/expectant each day as i eye spy that lovely oval brown box!

Seems everyones going to be stuck inside watching football LOL Hoping to get some more tweaking done on the coop and then hopefully a trip up to the ridge for some pictures Hope you all have a great egg filled day!
