These are just 2 of my 9 girls....

I was thinking the same thing about adding new birds. That's why I'm hatching this weekend, with the idea that they'll start laying mid summer. Of course at the rate my girls are going, the chicks that hatch tomorrow might lay eggs before my full grown birds.

HA,, I don't mean to laugh, but that is a funny thought. I can imagine how frustrating it is to wait. I got these red sex links because it was advertised they mature early. I didn't realize the fact that they would also burn out after a few years. Ah well. I can allready tell that one of the sex link girls is going to be a lifer here. She is named Sadie, and she is such a love bug. She and one of my barred rocks named Kate always come see what I'm doing. So cute, and curious. Today Mr. Duke was making all those noises the way roosters do when he was calling them away, and Kate gave me a look like she has a controlling husband, and just wanted to hang out with her best gf. She begrudgingly left.

I know you probably have stated this, and I am too tired to go searching, but what do you have in the bator again Brooster?

We got our second flock in May. They were supposed to be 3 Welsummers but I ended up with the 2 Wellies and 1 EE. The Wellies started laying Oct 12th My SS last egg was laid Oct 14th so it work out perfect on the timing. I don't think we will be adding to the flock this year. Since we live inside the city limits we are only supposed to have 4 chickens. But all my neighbors love my girls and the neighbors behind us are talking about getting some this year!
It is funny how you suck other people into your sticky web isn't it? I have started gifting to some friends, but I really don't have that many spare at the end of every day. My friends keep asking when it's their turn. I can't believe how many of them believe roosters lay eggs! I mean I know I was a newbie,, but at least I knew that only hens laid them!

What kind of personalities do your welsummers have? What color is your EE again?

So 2 out of 6 are laying, but now I'm being greedy :) Lucy our BA started last Friday and has laid everyday til today. Our welsummer, Stella, started the same time and has laid 5 out of the 6 days. Wish the other 4 would start :( I can't wait to go out and have 4 to 6 eggs to collect

We have finally got their names figured out too, besides the 2 above we also have Rosie, Julia, Lilly, and Dolly. Have a good night all!

I have BCM, Golden Cuckoo Marans, and White Marans. Two pips so far! I love this part.
oooooo,,, nice. We must see pictures Brooster! I would love a BCM hen to add to my flock. Do the other two types of Marans lay as dark eggs as the BCM? May I ask where you got your fertile eggs from?

Morning debbie,

It has taken me a while to finally get all the girls names down, we named them right away, but it took them to totally mature for me to see the subtle nuances of each girl to figure out who is who. Between my RIR's, the differnece boils down to simple black marks in the very last tail feathers, where as the other has just some solid black ones. When they molt, I guess I'm going to be in trouble. Size helps me figure out my Black Australorps, one is slightly larger than the other, thank goodness, because between them, there isn't a single discernable mark. My barred rocks have two different beak colors, and that is how I know, plus one is far more friendly than the other. I have a Rosie too!

I am suprised your red sex link wasn't one of the firsts to lay. Mine were, and they are the smallest skinnyest birds, and they lay the largest eggs. The yoke inside their eggs are huge too! so funny. My two Golden comets, (red sex links) are named Sadie and Matilda. They are seeming to be the egg machines so far. 6 eggs a week last week.

Have a good day!

I got the eggs from a nearby farmer, who I found after intense research. He's an old dude with no online presence. I had to ask every chicken person I knew in the county before I found someone with Marans. I was determined not to get shipped eggs this time. Turns out the guy lives 30 minutes away, and raises 9 different colors of Marans. His flock is stunning. The BCM and the Golden Cuckoo Maran eggs I got are dark but not super dark. I think they're maybe a 5 or 6 on the scale? Some of them might be darker than that. The White Maran eggs are lighter though. They're only slightly darker than the eggs my Australorp used to lay. But the White Marans are sooo pretty. All the farmer's birds have heavily feathered legs.

The hatch is going really well! I woke up this morning to 2 fully hatched chicks, 3 more zipping, and more pips than I can count! I started with 30 eggs, and 13 never developed. My best guess is that it's weather related. Fertility drops in the winter, and the week he gathered eggs for me, it never got above freezing, so the eggs might have frozen. Still, it looks like I might get close to 100% hatch rate on the developed eggs. I love my new incubator.

hello all, it's been a little while since i have checked in...

today my two now regular ladies, laid... and the barreds are getting redder and redder still! :)

today my budget AA batteries arrived to load up my wildcam, BUT i have had a few occasions to be out in the coop, catching the ladies in the act! they don't seem to mind me at all. (i probably would have been inclined to let them have some privacy, but my husband had spilled 3 gallons of water on his way to work... and with a forecast of zero degrees...i had to shovel it out!)

you all are funny with your chickens, i'm glad i am not the only one!i haven't been warming their feet, but i confess to warming their slightly chapped combs! (radiator breath!)

a horse tied to your fence!? terrible. i was just reading about horse trouble. terrible.

that video is hilarious... 'shut up' was a naughty word in my house too. i might be crazy, but i wouldn't eat the double egg i don't think... i don't know why.

i will post some pics next time... paula ryan has started laying regular eggs, but her first two were quite long and oval... and tiny.

ALSO, lol, i've realised i don't know what kind of chickens i have laying, as i thought (and we were told) they were black(blue)sussex... but i just learned there is no such thing! i think they are "black star",(but what are they?i don't know!) you lovely people will have to confirm for me, please.
